    LENOX HILL HOSPITAL-6

”What do you mean you can operate on Bette?”

Helena stared at Jackson in her office, Peggy was there with her and they weren’t there to play.

”it means I can do it, this surgery was done in England for the first time…now many Australian and American doctors opt for this procedure.”

”if they have the VAD my dear” Peggy stated.

Jackson looked at her, that woman had seen him born, she had trained him at Lenox Hill and knew him well, but he also knew that Bette Porter was a personal case difficult to give into the hands of science and the profession.

    Jackson was capable for sure.

”I’m not saying you can’t…” Helena said ”but have you ever done it?”

”No, but I’ve seen a lot of them”

Helena sighed laughing ”good heavens, are you serious or are you still the same old braggart?”

Jackson and Helena stared at each other.

”ok truce!” Peggy stood up staring at them ”now I’m talking, this hospital is mine, until my death… I raised you, Helena is my daughter but you could too, you were 21 and now you’re almost 38!” Jackson nodded staring at his shoes ”I can say with certainty that you are an excellent heart surgeon … but I also raised Bette Porter, her father was my friend… I can’t let you play or give her false hopes.”

”That’s not what I want.” Jackson admitted

”That’s not what we’re going to do Jack!” Helena finished ”unless you bring me good studies to do it, someone who knows more…or else we’ll go for the VAD”

”That the patient doesn’t want” Jackson stood up walking snowily ”She wants a life back to normal…if we go with the VAD her heart is gone, she’ll have to wait for a transplant or live with a pump forever…with a battery…is that what she wants?”

”Of course not…” Helena closed her eyes sinking into the chair ”but…I don’t know it’s too scary, Bette will accept…but before I tell her I want more Jack…please…or I won’t talk to Bette.”

The light filtered through the large window even though the thick green curtains were closed. Tina woke up, her feet were cold she could feel it, but her hand was warm, hot.

    1. And that is the reason that the patient always has the final say…. Bette is the one facing a life of being restricted to a room or a bed for the rest of her life. Bette is the one who will face her future whatever that is, not Tina, and not Peggy and not Helena. Bette is an educated physician, and she can read and evaluate the data just for herself. She knows the odds of success or of failure. She knows her own condition… she lives with it every day. In the end she needs to choose between a life as it now exists or the option to possibly overcome that with surgery.

In reality, Tina has no right to interject her opinion. She may love Bette, but there will be no life with Bette as long as she is in her current condition. A solid relationship is not based on daily visits or bringing her child to visit. That assist Bette in dealing with her life, but it is nothing more than friendship for Tina. There is no opportunity to really know who Bette is in this situation. There will be no shared future unless Bette is cured of her heart problems. And that is truly up to Bette.
