LENOX HILL HOSPITAL-6
She opened her eyes and saw a mass of curly hair in front of her. It was Bette.
Scared of seeing her worse than the day before Tina slowly rose up on one elbow, leaning gently she placed a hand on the brunette’s shoulder, her breathing was calm, she seemed to be quite normal.
When Tina touched Bette’s shoulder the brunette softly opened her eyes, sighing heavily as if after hours and hours of uninterrupted sleep.
Bette felt the heat behind her, she remembered Tina, she remembered the warm body behind her and she also remembered those sweet words, those words that Bette didn’t think she really deserved, that she didn’t believe would ever be directed at her again. Instead Tina had said them, silently taking it for granted that Tina was asleep.
But Bette wasn’t sleeping.
Those words had entered her like a film in a clear sky, beautiful but sharp. She turned at the blonde’s touch, her eyes eager to meet her. And so it was.
Tina smiled at her, her hair messed up and her face red from the pillow.
”hey…”
”Hey…what time is it?” Bette squinted at the window while Tina retrieved her watch.
”6:30, you’ll have breakfast soon…are you hungry?”
Bette nodded ”it seems so…” she raised herself on her elbows and Tina put a hand on her forehead ”it seems like you don’t have a fever but we’ll measure it with the digital ok?”
”Thanks for tonight” Bette finally smiled ”I imagine you’re dead tired and you have to start in less than two hours…”
”I’ve slept enough Bette…I don’t sleep much like the rest of us, you know.”
Tina got out of bed and Bette felt a great loss. The blonde reached for her bag taking out a small pouch with her toothbrush and other things for the morning routine ”I’m trying to make myself presentable…then they’ll bring us breakfast…oh first I’ll call Monica to make sure Angie doesn’t throw a tantrum” Tina said before entering the bathroom.
Bette smiled, Tina could really be a hurricane, so much so that she came back after ten minutes more beautiful than ever, her cheeks a little rosy and a little mascara on her eyelashes, her hair combed with hairpins.

And that is the reason that the patient always has the final say…. Bette is the one facing a life of being restricted to a room or a bed for the rest of her life. Bette is the one who will face her future whatever that is, not Tina, and not Peggy and not Helena. Bette is an educated physician, and she can read and evaluate the data just for herself. She knows the odds of success or of failure. She knows her own condition… she lives with it every day. In the end she needs to choose between a life as it now exists or the option to possibly overcome that with surgery.
In reality, Tina has no right to interject her opinion. She may love Bette, but there will be no life with Bette as long as she is in her current condition. A solid relationship is not based on daily visits or bringing her child to visit. That assist Bette in dealing with her life, but it is nothing more than friendship for Tina. There is no opportunity to really know who Bette is in this situation. There will be no shared future unless Bette is cured of her heart problems. And that is truly up to Bette.
