Lost & Found in the Rain

Bette: (after a pause) I’m not going to lie to you, Tina. I screwed up with Sophia. I wasn’t ready for anything serious back then. I was so focused on my career, and I used her. I hurt her, and I regret it. But you…

She looks up, her eyes filled with sincerity.

Bette: You’re not Sophia or any other girl. You’re not some game to me. From the moment I saw you, I knew you were different. You make me want to be different. I’m scared too, Tina. Scared of messing this up. But I’m not playing with you. I promise you that.

Tina looks conflicted, uncertainty flickering in her eyes as the rain intensifies. She wraps her arms around herself, a slight shiver running through her. The downpour soaks through their clothes, cold and relentless, yet neither of them makes a move to leave.

Bette: (frustrated, voice low) So, what now? You’re just going to walk away?

Tina: (quiet but firm) I never said that.

Bette: (scoffs, running a hand through her wet hair) You didn’t have to. You disappeared, Tina. A whole week of nothing, and now I’m standing in the rain like some idiot, trying to get you to just (pauses, breath catching) talk to me.

Tina exhales sharply, blinking against the rain.

Tina: (soft but conflicted) I needed time to think.

Bette: (steps closer, voice urgent) Think about what? Whether I’m worth the risk? Whether I mean anything to you at all?

Tina flinches, but she doesn’t step back. Instead, she lifts her chin, meeting Bette’s gaze head-on.

Tina: Whether I can trust you.

    Silence.

The rain drips from Bette’s lashes, her breathing uneven.

Tina studies her for a long moment, searching for something truth, maybe.

Tina: (voice barely above a whisper) I’m scared, Bette.

Bette’s expression shifts. The frustration in her features fades, replaced by something softer, something raw.

Bette: (gently, stepping even closer) So am I.

    Tina’s breath catches.

    Tina: (barely audible) You are?

Bette: (nods, voice thick with emotion) I don’t do this. I don’t chase. I don’t stand in the rain pouring my heart out. But for you? (a small, almost self-deprecating laugh) I’d probably stand here all night if it meant you’d believe me.

Tina’s walls start to crack, her fingers twitching at her sides.

Tina: (soft, hesitant) I want to believe you.

Bette: (reaching for her hand, voice steady) Then believe me.

Tina lets out a shaky breath as Bette’s fingers slip through hers, warm despite the cold rain.

There’s a beat just long enough for the weight of the moment to settle before Tina makes her choice.

She tugs Bette toward her, fingers twisting in the fabric of her soaked jacket, and crashes her lips against hers.

The kiss is a storm unto itself wild, urgent, a tangled confession of every unsaid word. It crashes between them like thunder, fierce and unrelenting, lips searching, hands grasping, bodies pulling closer as if the space between them no longer exists. The rain weaves through their hair, clings to their skin, slipping down their faces like the tears neither will shed. Bette’s fingers knot into Tina’s damp curls, anchoring her, while Tina grips the fabric of Bette’s jacket, as if letting go would send her spiraling into the unknown. They are lost in the downpour, in each other, in a moment where the whole world fades, leaving only the rain and the breathless ache between them.
When they finally pull away, their foreheads rest together, breathless, the storm still raging around them.

Tina: (whispering, eyes closed) Don’t make me regret this.

Bette tightens her hold on Tina’s waist, pressing another lingering kiss to her forehead.

Bette: (soft but certain) I won’t.

Tina exhales, finally letting herself believe it.

The rain keeps falling, but now, they don’t care.

    1. I loved how the scene played out, mostly because they were so honest with each other and actually talked things out rather than running away. Tina needs to make her own decisions and trust Bette rather than being influenced by friends. Bette needs to be honest with herself and knowing her past reputation should not prevent her from growing and loving respectfully. We know they made it to a certain point then things fell apart. I look forward to you filling in the years between when they met in college and how they ended up in divorce court. Great writing style. Thank you for sharing this story!

      • I really appreciate your thoughtful insight, It’s indeed a significant moment for Tina to trust her heart and for Bette to demonstrate her commitment to change. The journey from where they began to where they are now is rich with history and emotion, and it’s thrilling to delve into that narrative. Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts.

      • The rain wasn’t just a backdrop it was a storm brewing between them, mirroring every unspoken fear, every desperate hope. They weren’t just standing in the downpour; they were drowning in their emotions, clinging to each other like lifelines. And Helena? She struck the match, but Bette and Tina were always going to be the wildfire. There’s so much more to unfold, and I promise, the intensity is far from over.

    2. Oh geez, most definitely continue with this story. I like how skeptical Tina is of Bette from all the horror stories told to her about how Bette loves them then leaves them with no commitments. Please hurry with new chapters. Now that they are both soaked from the rain will they go to Tina’s room, Bette’s room or each to 5heir own rooms to change clothes and get dry.

      • The rain wasn’t just a setting it was a force, relentless and unforgiving, much like the emotions crashing between them. Bette, for so long, had been untouchable, slipping through hearts like sand, never staying long enough to leave a mark that mattered. But Tina? She was different. She wasn’t just another fleeting moment. And that terrified both of them.

Tina had every reason to hesitate. The stories of Bette’s past weren’t just whispers they were warnings. Bette was the storm people admired from a distance, never daring to step too close, because those who did never left unscathed. And yet, here they were, soaked and breathless, standing at the edge of something dangerous, something real. There’s still so much more to unravel and I’m excited to take you along for the journey. Appreciate your support.
