Love in Control – Chapter II – Savannah (Part 2)

“It is art designed to improve humanity; although we know now that it was a lie. We know that Marat was not virtuous, and that David’s work has almost the opposite effect on us. Or it should. Although we know the painting to be a beautiful lie, in its time it was dynamite, and it succeeded in its mission. For long enough for the guillotine to work; falling, chopping off head, after head, after head; ensuring blood would flow on the streets long after Marat’s passing. With the turn of the revolutionary wheel of leadership, however, the painting and its artist were banished, never to return to Paris. Its message, the consequences of it and its influence on those behind the “Reign of Terror” had sufficiently sickened the new leaders. When David’s family tried to sell it, no one would but it. Hundreds of years later, this painting, the best work of one of France’s most gifted artists, still sits outside of France. Like David’s remains, the painting stayed in Brussels.”

“These days, you could still appreciate it as a true work of art, if you don’t think about what it meant. If you do think about what it meant, you would see the insidious soul of Propaganda peering back at you, and be sickened. From somewhere inside you, perhaps your conscience would prick, give you pause, and prod you to think, “wait a second. What David has done with this painting, with his unique gifts as an artist, was to glorify a psychopath. He airbrushed beheadings of thousands, and enabled a paranoid man’s legacy to continue; he was an accomplice to evil on a grand scale. What he did was disgusting.”

Rian paused and took another sip from the water bottle she left next to the stool. The audience waited with baited breath for her next move. The silence lengthened as Rian surveyed the audience until there was a palpable sense of squirming, as if people couldn’t bear to be in the same room with those words.

“And what was the name of that painting?” Improbably, the question came from the donor’s section.

“The name of the painting was “Death of Marat.”

“If ever there was a question whether great art could actually kill, this was the answer. It was, and is, a great achievement in art; it was beautiful, true. But it was lethal. And it explains why, dear students, my answer to your questions is….”

    1. So pleased to read your story!

I don’t care that it isn’t a traditional Bette and Tina story line, but i wouldn’t mind if you give them more time in it ;-)

That was such a heart warming talk between Jade and Rian’s mom.

      Thanks for the update!

    2. It was a little early for my Pinot Noir, but well worth it, as it perfectly paired with your story. In fact, all of your stories are a full-spectrum sensory experience for me. Like a good glass of wine, I get lost in the color, bathe in the aroma, and relish the taste and texture of your scenes. Your give your protagonist characters a rich personality that I can’t help but instantly root for. While Bette and Tina initially drew me this this site and your stories, I really enjoy your other characters just as much.

Aerin virtually stole the words out of my mouth. If I had a professor like Rian during my undergraduate years, perhaps I would have gotten better than a C+ in my Art History class. I may have even been persuaded to change majors with such impassioned lectures.

As I was reading the dialogue between Jade and Rian’s mom, I was thinking that’s the type of mom I wish we had and we all would become. Well done.

    3. I normally am only interested in Bette and Tina stories, but not with this one im loving all your characters , and story lines, i can”t wait to read more. Thank you

      • Thanks for all your comments don70! Am glad you and others enjoy reading about these characters and am happy you find the different storylines they inhabit interesting. Please do continue to let me know your thoughts as this story progresses – based on actual places and people – as we explore what it means to love, and be stripped bare even if fully-clothed, before another.

    4. Genuine art has the power to strengthen the spirit of the people.
I loved Rian lecture, I applaud the end of the lecture.
And please do not let Tina looks at this Kaci, from what I read,
      I realized, it will happen.
      The complete constellation.
