    It was enough to halt TJ on his tracks, momentarily, and cause him to turn his attention away from the object of his little heart’s desire. He’d been struggling to conquer this teepee for months and he deeply wanted to get to the top of it, the way the bigger, older kids had been able to and had been crowing about, when they’d ascended to the top. But that commanding bellow was really something. He looked curiously at his red-faced sister. His mouth formed an “o,” and, based on how both Mommy T and Angie looked, instinctively, he knew that something was wrong. Because whenever someone in the house called him “Thomas” and in a loud voice, at that, he knew from experience that he had to stop whatever it was he was doing.

    So TJ stopped and looked at Tina guiltily. I must have done something for them to be bearing down on me like this. So the warning bellow was effective. But only for less than a minute.

    Many of the other kids and a few parents walking them to the playground had also stopped and looked at Angie bemusedly.

    Tina called out over her shoulder, weaving through people on the path, as she picked up her pace, “Angie, honey, keep up….”

    To their consternation, TJ “unfroze” and ran to follow the bigger kids who were about to scale the teepee. When he got to the nearest rung he could reach, he quickly climbed it, and used it as a springboard to a higher level hanging rope. When he felt that rope he gripped it with both hands. Excitedly, after he’d secured his grip, he copied what a bigger boy who’d been ahead of him had done — he swung his legs up to hook them onto the rope also. When he felt his lower legs rub the rope, instinctively he crossed his ankles so that his legs were now also hanging on to the rope while he continued to grip the rope with both hands. He was suspended about five feet off of the ground, but with no leverage to climb higher. He was stuck.

    As he figured out what to do, a group of boys who looked to be twice his age began clambering up the ropes, and soon they were crowding onto the same rope TJ was suspended from.

      I don’t care that it isn’t a traditional Bette and Tina story line, but i wouldn’t mind if you give them more time in it ;-)

    3. It was a little early for my Pinot Noir, but well worth it, as it perfectly paired with your story. In fact, all of your stories are a full-spectrum sensory experience for me. Like a good glass of wine, I get lost in the color, bathe in the aroma, and relish the taste and texture of your scenes. Your give your protagonist characters a rich personality that I can’t help but instantly root for. While Bette and Tina initially drew me this this site and your stories, I really enjoy your other characters just as much.

      Aerin virtually stole the words out of my mouth. If I had a professor like Rian during my undergraduate years, perhaps I would have gotten better than a C+ in my Art History class. I may have even been persuaded to change majors with such impassioned lectures.

      As I was reading the dialogue between Jade and Rian’s mom, I was thinking that’s the type of mom I wish we had and we all would become. Well done.

Please do continue to let me know your thoughts as this story progresses – based on actual places and people – as we explore what it means to love, and be stripped bare even if fully-clothed, before another.
