    Love’s Recovery

Maxine steadied her breath, knowing that she would need patience to navigate the waters with Bette and regain her daughter.

“Ok.” Maxine shifted in her seat trying to decide on a place to start. “As you know I went through rehab, trying to get myself in a better place to have a spot in your life again. I started painting again, doing a few commissioned pieces to pay the bills while I worked on my technique again.”

“Is that how you afford this beautiful beach house?” Kit asked.

“I continue to do some painting for sale, but nothing mainstream. There’s a collector in Mexico that seems to love my work so I’ve been able to live a bit and invest well.”

An uncomfortable silence fell over the three women and Maxine felt pressured to get Bette talking.

“I’m surprised you went into academia, Bette. I would think you would feel stifled by the rules that govern universities.”

    “Those who can’t, teach, right?”

“Well you don’t teach, you’re the Dean,” Kit corrected proudly. “That’s an accomplishment.”

“The CAC burned me out on the art business.”

“You did amazing things with your own gallery, ever think of opening another one?” Maxine prodded.

“It would severely limit my time with Angie, and that’s not an option. I’m the kind of mom that prides herself on being there for her daughter.”

Kit closed her eyes as Maxine got up to check on their dinner, avoiding the confrontation Bette so obviously wanted to have.

“It must be difficult to juggle with Tina’s career,” Maxine continued, opening the oven as she checked the contents inside. “She’s certainly running that movie studio almost single handedly.”

“Tina isn’t up for discussion, Maxine.” Bette defended her boundary quickly.

“Is anything up for discussion?” Maxine shut the oven door and turned to face Bette. “Anything about you we can actually discuss that won’t make you so defensive?”

“I knew this was a mistake.” Bette got up and placed her glass on the table near Kit.

“Bette please….: Kit called out as Maxine met Bette near the front door.

“I asked for a chance,” Maxine reasoned, “and I thought that we were working on getting to know one another better. I can’t do that if every conversation has an element of a ‘do not talk list’ involved in it. How can we get to know one another if the two most important parts of your life are out of bounds for me?”

“All I have is me,” Bette said angrily, “and I’m still not enough for you then at least you have a chance with Kit.”

Maxine stood, open-mouthed as Bette stormed out.

    1. Bette and Maxine have to discuss what happened to cause Maxine to make the choices she made. They can either discuss their history or their current status. Bette is making any communication impossible. Bette needs to shelve her anger and allow Maxine to tell her story. Then she can make a judgement as to if she wants a relationship or not. It is understandable that she is angry based upon what she knows. But she has agreed to give Maxine a chance. Now just do what you agreed to do, Bette!

      Good story…keep them coming.

    2. I am sorry ladies but i don’t agree with you.

I fully understand that Bette is angry with Maxine. She comes home from a work trip and suddenly there is Maxine, who has stubbornly squeezed herself into Bette’s family and friends, and Bette must suddenly give her a chance?

Bette should be given the opportunity to think carefully first, she is now more or less forced to talk to Maxine and give her a chance to tell her story.

Let Bette decide whether she wants to give Maxine a chance and not feel compelled by her friends, Tina, Kit and Maxine just because they think Bette should give Maxine that chance.

Great story Gumby and don’t you dare to wait another ten years to update ????????

    3. Thank you for the story!

Ok, so i think this Bette is still self-absorbed Bette who think first only about herself. If she don’t want to have any deal with her mother – it’s her choice, but i think she don’t have a right demanding that Tina and Angie don’t have a deal with Maxine too.
