    Loyalty Defined

It had been a banner night. Bette worked the room with her alluring smile that lit up the universe. She was a walking ball of light. Everyone danced to the sound of her laughter. She was gracious and she navigated the opening effortlessly making sure to spend a few minutes with each person in attendance. Bette Porter filled the space with her exuberance and owned it without even trying. Her presence, her very essence was consuming in a good way. Bette didn’t understand that sometimes people could get lost in it. That’s where Tina found herself on many occasions, drowning in Bette’s aura. The force was strong with this one. It wasn’t something Bette intended. It was just who she was naturally.

Her friends were never too far from Bette in case she needed them. All taking care of her from a distance. Bette thrived off of their energy. She walked by them all at least twice during the night, putting her hand on Alice’s back, nudging James, draping her arm around Dana’s shoulders, winking at Shane and linking pinky fingers with Kit. She loved how they held space for her, how they each were protective of her in their own special way. They were loyal to Bette. Making sure she was okay and readily available if she needed them. They all felt the fierceness of Bette’s love and believed it was their job to protect her.

“Hello, Bette,” she heard a familiar baritone voice say.

Bette swiveled her head to spy Franklin Phillips, the chairman of the board at the California Art Center. How did he get in here, Bette thought as she plastered her best Porter smile across her face. Franklin had tried unsuccessfully to woo Bette into becoming the Director of the CAC. He became a thorn in her side when he finally realized that was never going to happen. Bette did not like Franklin or the way he ran the CAC. He was a bully and one of the worst things you could give a bully was attention. Bette succeeded in not giving him any attention at all, which made him work even harder to position himself in her presence as often as he could.

“Well, Franklin. This is certainly a surprise,” Bette said.

    1. Oh I was worried with your opening statement that it was going to be really bad but this was expected Bette’s thinking you couldn’t come to the show but after I break you finally call. Yeah I wouldn’t have answered either.
