The crew was congregated in the living room. Each telling stories about what they saw and heard at the opening. All good things. They laughed again when James called Franklin a weasel. Alice’s phone lit up with Tina’s face on the caller id. She rushed to the pool area before Bette could see who it was. It was Sunday night. And by now, Alice would have already called Tina. However, Bette needed a little extra love tonight after her breakdown at the gallery.

“Tee, this isn’t a great time,” Alice whispered.

    “Al, I messed up.”

    “What’d you do?”

“I think I agreed to go on a date”

    “Wait. What? With who?”

    “Sam”

“Who the fuck is Sam? Wait. The DP you were telling me about?

    “Yes.”

“Um. Ok. So what does this mean?”

    “It means I fucked up.”

“That’s the fucking understatement of the fucking century.”

    “Al!”

“What do you want me to say, Tee? Is it really over between you and Bette? I thought…”

“She’s going to hate me, isn’t she?”

“Well, she sure isn’t gonna like it. This is big, Tee. Are you going?”

    “I…uh…”

“What do you mean? You….you know what? I can’t hear any more of this.”

    “Al, please.”

“No, Tina. I can’t.” Alice never called her Tina. “I’m not going to lie to my best friend. So, I need you to stop talking right now. This is fucked, Tina. Bette…,” Alice let the words trail off. Not sure it was her place to tell Tina what happened at the opening. Not wanting to betray Bette, but Tina was not making it easy.

“Bette…what…Al?,” Tina asked tentatively. Holding her breath.

    “Nothing. I gotta go.”

“Al! What are you not telling me?”

“This whole situation is just fucked. You need to figure out what the fuck you want, Tee. Because this in between shit isn’t fair to Bette or any of us. Do you even know what you’re doing to her?”

Tina flashed back to the day she left. Shane warned her. You don’t have to go, Tina. This will kill her. And you. Baby Yoda was right as usual.

“Probably the same thing I’m doing to myself, Al! And I know it’s not fair. I don’t want to hurt her.”

“Well, you are hurting her. So figure out your shit. Call her. Write her. Come back. Let her go. Do something for fuck’s sake.”

Tina sucked in air when Alice suggested she let Bette go.

Tina mustered up the courage to ask, “What happened last night at the opening, Al?”

“What do you think happened? Bye, Tee.” With that, the phone went dead.

Alice balled her fists, lifted her arms into the air, threw her head back and silently screamed. When she thought she was calm enough to return to the group, she turned to see Bette watching her from the door.

“Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit.,” Alice turned in circles.

Dana asked Alice where she’d been when she walked back inside. She didn’t get a chance to answer.

“Talking to Tina,” Bette stated simply. Alice averted her eyes.

James sobered up quickly. “We have a big meeting in the morning, Bette. I’m going to head out. I’ll be in early getting everything squared away.”

Bette nodded. Everyone abruptly stood and said their goodbyes. Kit squeezed Bette a little longer before she joined the others on the front porch. Shane waited.

    “I’m fine, Shane.”

    Shane lifted her eyebrows.

    “Really. I am.”

    Shane left through the garden.

Bette meandered through the house. Slowly locking up. The sound of her phone buzzing greeted her as she entered the gloomy bedroom.

Tina’s face lit up on her screen. Bette gently lowered herself to the bed and touched the red button.

    1. Oh I was worried with your opening statement that it was going to be really bad but this was expected Bette’s thinking you couldn’t come to the show but after I break you finally call. Yeah I wouldn’t have answered either.
