Luau (Chapter 4) -FINALE-

“You sure?” Alice couldn’t resist the opportunity to give back just a little of what they’d given to her and Dana time and again. She jiggled the door knob. “The lock’s not stuck is it?”
“No,” Bette tried to put her hand against the door, but couldn’t reach it. “Just give us a minute, will you?” Her tone was sharp with frustration.
Tina was too close to hold back, try as she might. She also couldn’t help but laugh out loud at the ridiculous circumstances. She released joyously and as quietly as she could manage, her face buried in Bette’s bosom.
“Well, we’re about to show our vacation video,” Dana teased. “I know you don’t want to miss that, so hurry up.”
“Fuck off you two,” Bette snapped. “We’ll be there when we get there.”
Alice dissolved into giggles, pulling Dana away before she could apologize. They returned to the patio and surveyed their guests, wrapped in each other’s arms. It was a beautiful sight. Lara and Helena were in their own little world while Peggy Peabody tried her best to entertain Dana’s parents with news of her latest acquisition by a young painter Bette recommended. Kit was off in a corner, reviewing the lyrics for Crazy Love, the Van Morrison song Dana had requested that she sing later. Jenny and her date of the moment, an overly intellectual type who clearly disapproved of this gathering, were chatting Beth up while Shane and Dave glowered at them from across the room.
“So, okay, we’re here,” Bette said as she and Tina returned. “What’s the big emergency?”
“You’ll see,” Dana smiled as she tapped on her glass to get everyone’s attention. Bette and Tina took their seats.
“As our dearest friends and family, our home is your home,” Alice said, “and Dana and I thank you all for coming tonight.”
“As you know, we took our inspiration for this evening from our recent…vacation,” Dana added, taking Alice’s hand in hers and kissing it. “We had the most amazing time so we thought we’d share a little bit of our trip with you, if you don’t mind.”
On cue the lights dimmed and the monitors came to life with a video that at first seemed like standard holiday footage, much of it shot by Alice. Against the stunning scenery of Maui, there was Dana in the helicopter as they toured the island by air, Dana in her scuba gear falling backward off the side of the boat, Alice and Dana swimming with dolphins…and then the screens went black for a second, leaving everyone in the glow of the candlelight.
