Kit’s strained relationship with their father bothered Bette and made a family reunion all but impossible but she understood the score and accepted it. She also understood she had trust issues to overcome. She assumed Kit had similar concerns.

Neither Kit or her father could fill the empty space left by her mother’s abandonment but reconnecting with Kit was a start. Bette was at a place in her life where she wanted to repair her relationship with Kit. Bette was very good at hiding these fears but under the confident facade existed a child terrified of being abandoned. She had begun to believe her inability to commit to a single woman was rooted in her abandonment issues. In the past, she had convinced herself that she was happiest playing the field. Now in her mid-thirties, she sometimes felt acutely alone and unfulfilled. A successful career and one night encounters were no longer enough.

Bette pulled out her phone to check the time. She hadn’t spotted anything in the shop that fulfilled the suitable memento requirements Bette had mentally hard listed but a few hours remained before Kit’s first set started at Mezzrow. She didn’t know if Kit still listened to vinyl but knew she could find rare jazz recordings at the Jazz Record Center. Fortunately, this was located near Mezzrow. Bette took a moment to consider her options. If she hurried home and changed quickly, she should have ample time to find the perfect gift at the Center before meeting up with a Kit at Mezzrow.

As the sales associate at Seidenberg watched, the beautiful woman inspected her phone and walked out of the store. He quickly approached a middle-aged couple viewing an elaborate and very expensive antique tea set from the 19th century. He had noticed the man had been making furtive glances at the beautiful woman and had a slightly sheepish expression on his face whenever his wife noticed. The beautiful woman had been engrossed by the wide assortment of antique trinkets oblivious of the effect she had on the male customer. This made him laugh.

He loved working amongst beautiful things and the commissions he earned selling those grossly over priced items. It was his birthday today and he appreciated the unexpected entertainment the beautiful woman and male customer had provided him. He had neglected other customers in favor of watching the brunette beauty but she was worth it. One of the advantages of working in New York was the abundance of attractive sharply dressed women with expensive tastes who frequented the store. “Nothing wrong with doing a little window shopping.” He thought as he smiled and offered assistance to the couple. Experience suggested it would take very little coaxing to finalize this sale from the secretly guilt ridden man. “Happy birthday to me and thank you beautiful lady.” He thought happily.

    1. Kat, welcome aboard. Nice to see you spreading your writing wings here. Very sweet short story. I’m with Bette, a public restroom is not the ideal place for a first kiss, but what a kiss it was. I hope you write more stories and share them with us. Keep on writing, you have a talent.

p.s., glad you took the advice (yes, that was me).

      • Thanks Cella. I appreciate the advice and was pleasantly surprised to find your response here. I am exploring all of the tips you listed elsewhere.

I just started the writing thing and am looking forward to creating more tales.

      • Hi Zhenya,

I will definitely consider expanding the story. To be honest, I have not plotted out the rest of the story. I will need to put on my thinking cap before I post additional chapters of this story.

    2. Hi, Welcome Aboard,

I think this has the makings of a longer story.

Enjoyed reading it and your characters are well written.

Thank you, hope to read more.

    3. Hello Kat and Welcometo the site. Enjoyed your story, certainly hope you expand this story, please keep Tina from bolting from Bette and Kit. She needs to stay and talk to them maybe in Kit’s dressing room or someplace other than the bathroom. Very interesting story. Please continue. Thanks for posting.

      • I agree, these girls need to get the heck out of that restroom.

There is the David setup an interview factor. So we should learn more about Kits past and her estrangement from her father. Many possibilities need to be explored and plotted for TiBette too before the next installment.

Thank you letting me know you enjoyed the story.
