Tina liked the vibe of this cozy jazz haunt that boasted no more than thirty marble topped cafe tables. Located in the basement of a former Italian restaurant, it had been gutted exposing brick walls and was furnished with decor that harkened back to the 1930’s jazz scene. A Steinway piano authentic to that period of time rested functionally against a back wall near the mahogany bar. A framed caricature of Mezzrow hung above the Steinway. The acoustics were intimate and the carefully detailed setting effectively transported the listener to the glory days of that bygone era but unfortunately only for one evening at a time.

As the band finished playing the song, an announcement was made that after a short break they would return for a second set.

Tina asked David, “Who’s the singer? She’s really good.”

“That’s Kit Porter. I was just thinking there could be an interesting story there. Something you might be able to develop.” Replied David.

“What do you know about her?” Asked Tina.

“Not that much. Fifteen years ago, she was all over the jazz scene. Critics touted her as someone to watch and I think she had a few songs that registered on national charts. She had developed a loyal following but just as suddenly fell off the radar. I saw her once. She was just as electric then as she is now.” David replied.

“I was drawn in by her too. Her voice is amazing. You know that’s not a bad idea. Practically everyone has a good story lurking around in their past. The little you know is intriguing and I would love to learn more of her story.” Said Tina.

“I think she’s based on the West Coast. If you want to meet her, we should see if she’s free tonight. I guess it’s a good thing I frequent Gin joints and know the bars booking agent.” David said jokingly. He raised the glass containing a Gimlet in mock salute and polished off his drink.

“It is short notice but let me see what I can arrange. If she’s looking for exposure, we may get lucky.” Replied David.

“Why don’t I freshen up while you make the necessary inquiries and we can meet back at the bar in 20 minutes. I’ll be the anxious Blonde sipping a Mojito waiting for her Prince of a reporter.” Tina replied with chuckle.

    1. Kat, welcome aboard. Nice to see you spreading your writing wings here. Very sweet short story. I’m with Bette, a public restroom is not the ideal place for a first kiss, but what a kiss it was. I hope you write more stories and share them with us. Keep on writing, you have a talent.

p.s., glad you took the advice (yes, that was me).

      • Thanks Cella. I appreciate the advice and was pleasantly surprised to find your response here. I am exploring all of the tips you listed elsewhere.

I just started the writing thing and am looking forward to creating more tales.

      • Hi Zhenya,

I will definitely consider expanding the story. To be honest, I have not plotted out the rest of the story. I will need to put on my thinking cap before I post additional chapters of this story.

    2. Hi, Welcome Aboard,

I think this has the makings of a longer story.

Enjoyed reading it and your characters are well written.

Thank you, hope to read more.

    3. Hello Kat and Welcometo the site. Enjoyed your story, certainly hope you expand this story, please keep Tina from bolting from Bette and Kit. She needs to stay and talk to them maybe in Kit’s dressing room or someplace other than the bathroom. Very interesting story. Please continue. Thanks for posting.

      • I agree, these girls need to get the heck out of that restroom.

There is the David setup an interview factor. So we should learn more about Kits past and her estrangement from her father. Many possibilities need to be explored and plotted for TiBette too before the next installment.

Thank you letting me know you enjoyed the story.
