Old Friends Chapter 24
After leaving Dana at the gym, Bette went to Alexs hotel. When Alex opened the door in her bathrobe looking rough, Bette was able to guess how the previous night had been spent.
Bette made coffee as Alex returned to bed. When it was ready, Bette brought 2 cups of coffee into the bedroom. She kicked of her shoes and stole a pillow from Alex. The two lay side by side propped against the headboard sipping their coffee. It was a scene that had been repeated many times in their lives.
Thanks for talking last night. Bette said.
Thanks for caring, Betty. I guess Ive done a pretty good job of letting you slip away.
Me too. Ive let you slip away too easily. I should have put up a fight.
I guess were all grown up now, huh?
I suspect that most people, Tina included, would say that is a matter of opinion. Bette responded with a laugh.
You still havent told me what is going on in DC. Bette said after a couple of minutes of silence.
I open up a little bit and now you want the floodgates to pour? Alex asked.
Yeah, you owe me.
For what?
For threatening to help my kid blackmail me.
No threat there, Bette. It was promise.
Whats going on, Alex?
If you must know, the idiot who manages my money wants me to sell the condo. He says I dont need it. Apparently, last year I spent less than 30 days living in it. What kind of jackass actually counts ***** like that?
I will surmise that you offered suggestions of where he could put his suggestions?
That condo was where I lived with Catherine for the last few years of our life together. It would be like letting go of a piece of the time we had together.
Then why is this even an issue?
Money.
Alex, why do you need money?
Well, Betty, I make a decent amount of money from the books. However, I live an expensive lifestyle. The hotels, restaurants, rental cars all add up. It seems that if I purchase a home in Canada, I will have tapped a significant portion of my liquid assets.

Finally, the truth will set her free. I’m glad she was able to open up, now maybe she’ll be able to work on the guilt to the point where she will no longer need to medicate herself. Thanks for sharing, and I’m looking forward to how Bette can be the supporting friend Alex deserves.
What a secret to carry around. Poor Alex. Thanks for putting Bette and Tina back together. I hope you let them put Alex back together.
