Private Duty—Chapter 1

Bette came from her thoughts and looked over at Tina who sat stoically staring at her plate.
”Would you like me to warm that back up for you? You need to eat something” Bette offered
Tina shook her head
”No. I’m going to go sit with Mom then go to bed. You are officially off duty until Sunday night so please feel free to go and do whatever you need to. I’ve got her. Tricia will be here most of the day tomorrow so please take some time for yourself” Tina said getting up, putting her plate in the refrigerator and walking out of the kitchen.
Bette finished up her dinner and put her plate in the sink. She headed up the stairs, went into her room and dug around in her bag looking for something and sighed in relief when she found it. She then walked into Theresa’s room where Tina was sitting with her head resting on the bed.
”Tina?” Bette said softly as Tina lifted her head to look at her ”Before I head to my room for the night I wanted to give you this. I kept it around my neck the entire time I was in that cellar. It kept me going. It was because of you I was able to survive and keep the other two safe”
Tina held out her hand and watched as Bette placed the necklace in it then turn and walk out of the room. Tina looked at the necklace and gasped remembering it was the necklace she gave to Bette the day she came to their house.
”She kept it all this time” Tina muttered as her eyes glistened with tears again
Flashback:
”Come here Elizabeth. I want to show you something” Tina said as she pulled out her jewelry box.
Bette sat beside Tina and watched intently as Tina opened it and pulled out a silver necklace containing and angel wing pendant containing a verse on the back.
”I want you to have this. I am sad that you lost your parents. This will help keep you going when you feel sad or lost” Tina said handing the necklace to Bette.
Bette held it in her hand and rubbed her finger over the angel wing and flipped it over to see a scripture and read it out loud.
”Isaiah 40:31 But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint”
Bette finished reading and a tear fell from her eye. She turned to Tina and hugged her tightly
”Thank you so much. I will wear it always” Bette said as Tina smiled hugging Bette close.
Tina smiled at the memory and clutched the necklace in her hand. She wiped a tear away and looked to see her mother staring at her.
”Hey Mom. Did you hear Bette come in a few minutes ago?” Tina asked
Theresa blinked once
”It kills me every time to think of what I caused and what she had to go through. She should hate me but she has been nothing but the kind and gentle soul that I remember. What can I do?” Tina sighed
Theresa stared at Tina then struggled to speak. Tina watched as Theresa opened her mouth moving her lips and finally uttering her first word since the stroke.
”Forgive” Theresa whispered
Tina cried tears of joy that her mother finally spoke but they were also mixed with tears of pain as she couldn’t forgive herself for hurting the person that captured her heart all those years ago.

I remember this so pleased to see it back and look forward to you continuing it and completing it.
Happy New Year, stay safe

Happy New Year to you SG! You stay safe!
This is a good beginning…. but please do not abandon your other story….. I so want to see what happens to Bette and Tina in that one as well as this one…..
I am going to have to start taking notes on all the stories that are in progress… I love reading them all, but I get somewhat frustrated when they suddenly end with no ending…. I get particularly frustrated when the story goes on for many months and chapters and then suddenly just stops – then years go by and nothing. And then suddenly the author will start to write again and starts one or two or three stories with no mention of the saga which I have been waiting for for months perhaps years. And the strange thing is that the stories are good and seem to be so close to completion. Another couple of chapters maybe????
Totally understand your frustration Martha!…If you are referring to Stolen Hearts it only has one chapter remaining for that book. I should post it soon. I have not decided to do a sequel. It would depend on demand. As far as Soul Dancing that one is far from over. This one however I have been writing on and it’s almost finished. It could warrant a sequel..but again.. that would be up to you the readers
Thank you for the comment!
I completely echo your comments.
A Happy and Healthy New Year Martha
Gr8 story. Sometimes forgiving ones’ self is a monumental task. Breaking patterns of self-hatred take more than a little bit internal tenacity. Tina will ultimately have to let Bette help her through the guilt and pain. And even Theresa will have to let Bette show her kindness.
Looking forward to more chapters!
Great story.. I hope to read more, please.
I remember this story and i am glad you have almost written all the chapters and yes i would love to read a sequel!
And of course I will read the other stories!
Happy New Year!
This is a really good chapter. Great beginning to a very intriguing story. Bette is very forgiving.
