    Real Tibette – Thanksgiving 2023

‘Y’know, I think this is gonna be okay,’ Bette said, smiling as she sat in front of the fire, eating s’mores and getting her hair put in a plait by Sasha.

Ben had come back down after his sister was ordered to apologise. There was a firm rule against name-calling, even by implication, in this family. Sasha tested the limits, though. The girl, who would be ten in a matter of weeks, was such a rollercoaster, always pushing forward and falling back, one minute shockingly adult, the next maddeningly infantile. It would be bewildering if Bette and Tina hadn’t lived through it twice already.

Mid-morning, Angie messaged to say she was an hour away, so Bette filled her in on the basics of the situation. Angie replied with a row of laughing emojis. Bette showed Tina.

‘Well, at least she’s seeing the funny side,’ said Tina.

Sonny made toast, hot chocolate, oatmeal. Sasha picked flowers. Ben chopped more logs. Kit and Bette played Scrabble. Tina read the New Yorker. Solly roasted himself in front of the fire. With no big meal to prepare, suddenly the day felt longer – and more fun.

And then, barely half an hour later, there was a knock at the door.

    Everyone looked at each other.

‘Did you hear a car?’ Sonny asked.

No one had, not even Sasha, with her supernaturally good hearing. Solly was already standing at the door, wagging his tail and doing his ‘c’mon, hurry up’ jig.

Bette got up and went towards the door. Something was off. They could all feel it. Kit put her hand around Sasha’s shoulder. Ben stood up. Tina took off her reading glasses.

    Bette opened the door . . .

    ‘SURPRISE!!!!’

The chorus of voices made her lean back. And brought everyone else rushing to the door, to see Alice, Jed, Stephanie, Helena and Ringo (Helena’s dog) standing there.

Solly gathered his wits first and went to check out Ringo’s goolies.

‘Alice . . .’ Bette said, completely thrown.

    ‘Happy Thanksgiving, Porter!’

Sasha barged past Bette and went for hugs.

‘What are you doing here?!’ said Tina, laughing.

‘Our first New York Thanksgiving, we thought it would be nice to see you!’ said Alice, with her arm around Jed’s waist.

Yes, I’m enjoying the family growing up – working out what the kids are into and how having Alice in NY affects things. There’s a lot of moving parts. Thanks for taking the time to read it and comment. Means a lot.

    4. Largo,
I correct the previous comment . . . DISagree that U have been “arrogant” by calling this masterpiece as “REAL”. Pfff! It certainly I S that!!!

Authors on this site have enraptured us with exquisite insight in filling gaps that were not revealed in TLW nor GenQ.

Excellent writing as per your usual postings.

Tibette has so perfectly fit themselves into each other & draw such strength from one another.

And Angie, trying her hardest to find the right fit & balance in her life & love. Hopefully we’ll get to read in the not to distant future who she meets & really falls in love with.
