    Real Tibette – Thanksgiving 2023

‘Well, I hope you brought your own whole-ass dinner,’ said Kit. She’d only just worked out a reasonable meal plan, and now there four more mouths to feed! And another dog!

‘Your face is a picture,’ said Jed to Bette, ‘and not in a good way.’

    ‘Ah, well—’

‘We’ve got a situation,’ Sonny told the new arrivals.

    ‘A situation?’ said Stephanie.

‘Coons in the basement,’ said Ben authoritatively.

‘Coons?’ said Helena, making vermin sound like tea and scones. ‘May we come in and hear about them?’

    ***

As it happened, Alice and her posse were not Thanksgiving crashers. Helena had rented a cabin nearby and they’d parked up along the track so as not to tip them off. Jed had been jonesing for a good old-fashioned New England Thanksgiving, with pretty red-and-gold trees and a lake and touch football. Originally, Shane and Jo were part of the surprise too, until their cover story weirdly turned real when Jo’s mom invited them to Florida. But now, of course, everything had changed again.

‘You can come over to us!’ Helena said.

‘What, all of us?’ asked Sasha.

‘No,’ said Kit, ‘you go enjoy yourself, babygirl, I’ll stay here with the goddamn raccoons!’

Tina hid her laughter against Bette’s shoulder.

‘We have food,’ Ben said. ‘It’s just crap like Doritos, but there’s a lot of it.’

Bette swatted his shoulder over the choice of language (although the description of their larder was accurate).

‘We have a ton of food,’ Jed said.

‘Yeah,’ agreed Alice, ‘and what’s that other stuff called? Oh yeah, electricity.’

    Everyone laughed. Decision made.

    ***

    ‘Oh, Bette . . . oh my God . . . oh, honey . . .’

Bette stood next to her wife, wondering for the first time in her life if Tina had been faking orgasms by fantasising about hardwood flooring.

‘I think this might be ebony . . .’ Tina purred. ‘Helena, is this ebony?’

    ‘Yes,’ said Helena.

‘Bette, did you hear? She said it’s ebony.’

‘I’m standing right here,’ said Bette grumpily.

‘THERE’S A SHOWER!’ Sasha announced from the minstrel gallery.

Bette caught Helena’s eye, and said defensively, ‘We have a shower too.’ And yet she knew why Sasha was excited. Because the shower here would be modern, and spotlessly clean, with good pressure and a proper screen rather than a nylon curtain that clung to your body like cold, wet Saran Wrap. But is it really a cabin? Bette wanted to ask. Because, to her, it took more than being located in the countryside to make a cabin. This, she would contend, was simply a nice house beside a lake.
