    Real Tibette – Thanksgiving 2023

Tina beamed. Bette gave Alice a baleful look – but, as ever, her eyes were smiling.

When the main course appeared, Sasha asked if she could name the bird.

‘Ohmygod, you still have that tradition?’ said Alice.

‘Well, it’s not a tradition if you just quit doing it,’ said Kit.

‘I’ve got a pen,’ said Angie. Then, to Ben: ‘You got a notepad?’

Ben held up his hands, like ‘do you see a notepad on me?’.

    ‘I’ll get one,’ said Jed.

‘But you’re going have to explain the game,’ said Helena.

So Tina explained: everyone writes down a name, put ’em in a bowl, choose one, write it on a flag, stick it in the bird.

‘Is there a theme or a governing principle?’ Stephanie asked.

    ‘Oh Lord . . .’ muttered Kit.

‘Might be handy?’ said Helena. ‘Stop us ending up with a turkey named after a baseball player or a Cubist sculptor.’ She winked at Bette, from behind her glass of Pellegrino.

‘I like a theme,’ said Alice, ‘a theme is good. Let’s do that.’

Suggestions were made but the only one everyone liked was ‘movie stars’. And that is how the Thanksgiving turkey 2023 wound up being called Pam Grier.

    ‘Who’s she?’ asked Ben.

‘She’s a very beautiful woman,’ said Sonny, whose name had been picked.

‘That’s not an answer,’ said Sasha.

And it wasn’t. But it made Kit, whose husband always said she resembled the gorgeous Ms Grier, smile.

With the meal finished, and the wishbone pulled (Tina’s turn: she chose Jed, and lost), everyone settled into playing games or watching football. Jed was still somewhat in the process of trying to pick which NY sports teams he would commit to. Ben put the case for the Islanders, the Mets, the Nets and the Jets.

‘Kid just loves to lose,’ Sonny smiled, slapping his nephew affectionately on the shoulder.

Jed laughed. ‘You go to games?’

    ‘Sure,’ said Ben.

‘When Mom lets him,’ added Sasha.

All three lads spun round. They hadn’t noticed her lurking behind the sofa.

‘No mistaking who runs our worlds, is there?’ Jed said, looking across at the women gathered round the dining table. ‘But hey, while I have you . . .’

He leaned in a little. Sonny and Ben did the same.

I correct the previous comment . . . DISagree that U have been “arrogant” by calling this masterpiece as “REAL”. Pfff! It certainly I S that!!!
