    Real Tibette – Thanksgiving 2023

As they shut the door behind them, both women exhaled in relief.

    ‘Oooh,’ said Angie. ‘Fresh air!’

‘And quiet!’ added Tina. It was lovely being part of a big, busy family but sometimes walking Solly by herself was very precious alone time.

The area around this cabin was immaculately lit and beautifully landscaped, with graceful wooden walkways sweeping down to the water’s edge. Groups of mature maples and sycamores broke up the glittering expanse of lake into pleasing views.

‘This must’ve cost a pretty penny,’ Tina said.

    ‘You mean to rent?’

‘Yeah. I’ve seen what a nice cabin costs around here.’

Angie laughed. ‘And then there’s ours!’

Tina laughed too. They strolled down towards the water, where there was a sculpted wrought-iron barrier, to stop kids and dogs jumping in, and a gate that led to the jetty. They stood for a moment watching the dogs. Ringo used to be one of two, but sadly his brother George had recently passed away.

‘What kind of dog is he?’ Angie asked.

‘A Corgi.’ A pause, then Tina turned and added, ‘Complete coincidence the Queen had those too.’

    ‘What queen?’

    ‘The Queen of England.’

‘Oh. Every day’s a school day.’

They linked arms and crossed a wide expanse of spongey grass, towards the jetty. The air was damp, a stony tingle from the water making Tina feel energised, piercingly alert.

At the gate, they stopped and leaned on it, their backs to the water. Tina had been trying not to examine her daughter too overtly, but now she noticed the slightly sunken flesh below her eyes (so like Bette) and the fact that her skin had broken out a little around her chin, like it used to when she was stressed at school.

‘So,’ she said, after a measure of silence, ‘do you mind if I ask?’

The young woman didn’t react right away, but Tina knew she’d heard. In fact, if she knew her elder daughter at all, she knew that Angie was expecting this.

‘All I can tell you is that I wasn’t happy.’

Tina’s heart squeezed with pain, to hear that.

‘Like, when we were just friends . . .’ Emotion caught in Angie’s throat. ‘We were friends for so long, Mom.’ She looked at Tina, her pretty, almond-shaped eyes full of tears. ‘And we weren’t sure whether to be . . .’

Yes, I’m enjoying the family growing up – working out what the kids are into and how having Alice in NY affects things. There’s a lot of moving parts. Thanks for taking the time to read it and comment. Means a lot.

    4. Largo,
I correct the previous comment . . . DISagree that U have been “arrogant” by calling this masterpiece as “REAL”. Pfff! It certainly I S that!!!

Excellent writing as per your usual postings.

Tibette has so perfectly fit themselves into each other & draw such strength from one another.
