    Real Tibette – Thanksgiving 2023

    ***

Six, seven, eight p.m. came and went . . . Kit was snoozing. Sasha was yawning.

‘Time someone headed for the hills?’ Tina wondered.

Bette went upstairs to make sure Sasha’s bed was all set up. She and Angie were sharing one of four double bedrooms. Ben was in a box room, on a futon. Bette and Tina had insisted they’d be fine crashing on a sofa in the living room.

When she came back, she leaned down to whisper in Tina’s ear. ‘You seen Pat?’

Tina closed her eyes and sent up a prayer for forbearance.

‘I’ll check the car,’ said Bette, and kissed her wife’s neck before telling Sasha to start saying goodnight. Then she went outside, to see if she could unearth the little blue menace. A few minutes later, she found Tina upstairs with Sasha, who was brushing her teeth.

Tina’s eyes asked the question. Bette’s answered it.

‘What are you doing?’ Sasha asked, seeing them in the mirror above the sink.

Bette ignored the question. ‘You ready?’

Sasha spit into the sink, rinsed it, then followed her mothers to the bedroom. It was a very nice room, but unfamiliar, and Sasha was notoriously poor at sleeping alone.

‘When’s Angie coming up?’ she asked.

‘Oh, not for a while, baby,’ said Tina, fussing with the curtains.

‘You want me to stay till you fall asleep?’ Bette asked.

Sasha looked uneasy. She clearly didn’t like being babied and yet . . .

‘I could have Pat,’ she mumbled, as she climbed into bed.

‘Well,’ said Tina, ‘the thing is, we think maybe you forgot to bring him, so—’

    ‘Where is he?’

‘We don’t exactly know, honey, probably back at the cabin.’

    ‘Probably?’

Bette looked to the heavens. Tina, realising her mistake, sat on the bed.

‘Why don’t you just sleep with us tonight?’ she said. ‘And th—’

‘What if a raccoon gets him?’

    ‘Oh, the rac—’

    ‘What if he’s lonely?’

That stopped Tina in her tracks. She looked at Bette. Was this checkmate Sasha? Bette looked at her daughter’s huge brown eyes. Her own personal Kryptonite.

‘All right,’ she said softly, and headed for the door.

    ‘Bee?’

    ‘Mmm?’

    ‘Don’t go back there alone.’

    ‘I won’t.’

With Sasha’s bedtime postponed, Alice suggested they watch a movie. Helena said Ringo needed out first, but she didn’t seem keen so Angie offered to do it. Tina said she’d take Solly too.

I correct the previous comment . . . DISagree that U have been “arrogant” by calling this masterpiece as “REAL”. Pfff! It certainly I S that!!!
