Reunions reunite: Did I miss it?

“Oh sorry,” said the young guy, “here, let me help you.”

She smiled as he lifted her bags onto the trolley, he must have been about Ange’s age and probably travelling judging by the dusty backpacks. She thought of Angelica and how young she was, too young to become a mother. She felt guilty for leaving and guilty for not being there, punishing herself by telling herself over and over that maybe she could have prevented this, knowing that if Bette couldn’t then neither could she.

She pushed through the Arrivals gate and there she was. A little bit older but still the same, still so beautiful it took her breath away. They embraced in a tight hug.

“Hey T” mumbled Bette, pulling her away to get a good look at her. She looked tired, but other than that she looked good. “How was your flight?”

“Long … so?” she asked, desperate to know and yet not wanting to. When they’d last spoke Ange was in early labour and Tina knew she had yelled in frustration at Bette down the phone.

Bette looked at her, so sorry that she’d missed it, so wishing she could change that fact along with a million others over the years that had happened and hurt her, she sighed, shaking her head

    “Sorry”

Tina burst into tears, sad joyful tears and buried her face into the shoulder of Bette’s suit jacket, she had been dressing for an important meeting when Ange had gone into labour earlier that morning.

“Is she okay?” she asked, emerging with wet eyes.

Bette flashed her a winning smile, lifting her hand from where it held tight around her waist to wipe the tears from beneath her eyes, “Mother and baby are both doing fine.”

“What did she have?” Tina asked, recovering herself.

“A beautiful baby girl,” Bette whispered, her face in Tina’s hair, “she’s called her Emily.”

Tina broke down again as Bette just held her close, waiting patiently until she composed herself.

When it looked like she was done Bette released her hold and reached behind her to pick up the coffees from the seat.

“Planet iced-coffee,” she said, offering Tina one. She grinned, accepting with pleasure.

“Yum … eugh … yuck Bette, it’s warm.”
