Reunions reunite: Did I miss it?
Bette pretended to be surprised, playfully slapping her on the arm, “Come on, lets go granny.”
In the car she passed Tina her cell phone.
“You want to call her?” she asked
Tina shook her head, “I want to wait, can we go straight there?”
Bette nodded.
“How’s London?” she asked, making conversation
“Fine,” said Tina, “they said to take as much time as I want,” she laughed, “I think they’re looking forward to some time without the boss breathing down their necks.” She added, aware how it made Bette smile to hear she was successful.
It had never been the plan to move to London, but a year sorting out a failing independent studio had turned in to five triumphant years as the head of a major independent UK filmmaker. But it had been costly; five years away from Los Angeles, five years away from Bette and despite the occasional visit five years away from her teenage daughter.
Tina sat quietly, her teenage daughter who wasn’t a teenager anymore, she was 18 when Tina left and now she was a mom, Tina struggled to believe it.
“Are you okay?” Bette asked, resting her hand gently on Tina’s leg. Despite their distance and lack of a ‘real’ relationship for many years they’d always remained affectionate towards one another.
Tina looked at her, the woman who gave her Angelica, who told her she should follow her dreams – that she and Ange would be fine so long as she was fine.
She sighed, “I’m so sorry Bette”
Bette tilted her head, “What for?”
“I never should have left” Tina replied.
“T … we’ve been over this a thousand times,” replied Bette, “you did what you had to do, Ange knows that”
“I know,” sighed Tina, resting her hand upon Bette’s and tracing the length of her long fingers, “I know that, but do you?”
“Where are they?” Angelica asked Kit for the eighth or ninth time, “What’s taking them so long?”
“Maybe the stopped off on the way?” suggested Alice, without thinking, her mind automatically reverting back to the usual reason Bette and Tina were late when they used to be a couple.
“Alice” warned Kit with a look, “Honey I’m sure they just got held up at baggage claim.”
