    Finale

    "Then, I will make sure, I always hold you like that." Bette concluded carefully tightening her hold on the injured woman.
    The uncertainty of their future sprung to the fore once again. Tina was not going to be here forever and neither woman had ever really talked about it.
    "They are here ..you know." Bette said after a brief silence. She had decided the time had come to broach the subject.
    "Who?"
    "Your replacement, the new auditor…. Helena phoned yesterday to tell me…" 
    "Oh.." was all Tina could say. Bette’s statement was simple and its meaning did not escape Tina. She knew what Bette wanted to talk about. What was in store for them, now that there was really no reason anymore for the accountant to remain in Africa?  
    Tina had already made her decision and she needed to share it with the brunette.
    There was another brief moment of silence between them.
    "Bette?" 
    "Yeah?"
    Tina wanted to say something but visibly hesitated. She took the tip of one slender finger and started tracing patterns softly over the back of Bette’s hand. The vet halted her caressing action and turned her hand over subconsciously to allow the accountant to give the same gentle teasing to her palm. 
    "I ….. I don’t know how to say this…. but…" Tina began softly, "I …. you… I have failed you!"
    Tina turned her head up to look at a very puzzled Bette. 
    Before the vet was able to speak, Tina continued slightly more animated this time, punctuating her words with the splayed fingers of her good hand.
     "The audit… I had to fail you for part of it; there was no other way… I mean who has ever seen such terrible bookkeeping… Double entry is truly not rocket science… but you, Bette Porter, are by far the worst bookkeeper ever…."
    "You failed me?" Bette interrupted, "You. Failed. Me!" Bette repeated emphasising each word in turn.
    Tina stopped her ranting and looked at Bette with wide eyes. The vet seemed annoyed judging by the stern look on her face.
    Tina swallowed not knowing what to do. She bit her bottom lip. "Well… fail is a big word … I made some recommendations, in my first report… the one I sent away before you and I…"

    12. I was wondering how long you were going to make us wait for the post-penultimate(?) chapter! But it was worth the wait. Just lovely. You created a wonderful story. Now, not to be piggy or anything, but “29” IS kind of a lopsided number to end on… in case you were thinking of an Epilogue or anything…

You have this earnest way you write so freely and painstakingly a myriad of beautifully woven word that flow like a river. As are indeed as beautiful as the Savannah you describe. I would be number 24. Although I do not understand completely what you’ve asked of us readers but still my contribution nonetheless.

    19. 23. I couldn’t help but think of the number on Tina’s letter. As for this wonderful tale, though I have been remiss in commenting, I have loved every chapter. I just watched a tv special titled “The Secret Language of Elephants” and couldn’t help but think of your Savannah. As I watched the gathering place of some 50 elephants and the woman who has spent two decades saving them, my mind wandered to your vet and her Foundation. Adorable ending with Tina admitting to Bette that she had failed her…as if that were possible! Would love to see an epilogue or random chapters. Thanks for sharing your talent!

Its a new beginning is such a wonderful start of rain season in Africa, this is the sweetest end of story ever ;DI’m sad that this amazing story end but I hope that you will gift us with new creation of yours soon.
