    (Ground control to Major Tom…) “Bette, babe, did you hear me? Bette, say something. Can you hear me babe?” (You’re circuit’s dead, there’s something wrong. Can you hear me Major Tom?) I can see myself sitting there on the couch next to Tina. I hear her trying to talk to me, but I can’t respond.

    (Ground control to Major Tom…)

    “Bette, babe, did you hear me? Bette, say something. Can you hear me babe?”

    (You’re circuit’s dead, there’s something wrong. Can you hear me Major Tom?)

    I can see myself sitting there on the couch next to Tina. I hear her trying to talk to me, but I can’t respond. I can’t remember how to get my mouth to form the words.

    “Bette, I’m sorry. If you don’t want me to stay, it’s ok. I’ll go.”

    (Here am I floating round my tin can far above the Moon. Planet Earth is blue and there’s nothing I can do…)

    Synapses firing…hold please… Wait, what did she just say? She’ll go? No, no, no!!!! Say something Bette! Oh fuck, she’s crying! Mouth, work dammit! I command you to work!

    “T, wait! Baby I’m sorry! Of course I want you to stay! I’m so sorry, you just took me by surprise. I can’t think of anything I want more than for you to stay. Please, stay.”

    I took her into my arms & hugged her tighter than I ever have. I couldn’t wipe the shit eating grin off my face. Those words. Her words. Such a simple request, yet life altering. Oh yes, I am happy. So very happy. I loosen my grip slightly and whisper softly into her ear, “are you ready to go to bed now, or do you want to stay up a while longer? I’m ok either way.”

    “I’m tired babe and I know it’s going to be a long and stressful week for us both. Is it ok if we go to bed now?” “Of course T. Whatever you want to do is fine with me.”

    We make our way down the hall to the bedroom. I grab 2 pairs of boxers and 2 tank tops from my dresser. We didn’t plan this ahead of time, so I know she doesn’t have a bag with her. I keep extra tooth brushes just in case, so I pull out a new one and hand it to her.

    “I’ll change in the bedroom and you can change in here, then we can both brush our teeth and get ready for bed ok?” I leave the bathroom to give her the privacy she needs and we each get changed. Then, I knock softly on the door to make sure she’s ready. She opens the door and I enter again. We brush our teeth and wash up in silence.
