    Sensory Overload

    Sense #3: Smell

Smell, like taste, is a chemical sense detected by sensory cells called chemoreceptors. When an odorant stimulates the chemoreceptors in the nose that detect smell, they pass on electrical impulses to the brain. The brain then interprets patterns in electrical activity as specific odors and olfactory sensation becomes perception — something we can recognize as smell. The only other chemical system that can quickly identify, make sense of and memorize new molecules is the immune system. But smell, more so than any other sense, is also intimately linked to the parts of the brain that process emotion and associative learning. The olfactory bulb in the brain, which sorts sensation into perception, is part of the limbic system — a system that includes the amygdala and hippocampus, structures vital to our behavior, mood and memory.

surprised – taken unawares or suddenly and feeling wonder or astonishment

Yeah, I’d say that pretty much covers it. Surprised. Feeling wonder or astonishment. Yep, that’s exactly it.

    (Right, so round 3?)

Somewhere around 8:00am, I was jarred awake suddenly when my brain became highly engaged due to an onslaught of my olfactory bulb. We had both slept peacefully throughout the night without even the slightest hint of movement, but as Tina began to stir this morning, she moved her head up higher onto my pillow and into my face’s personal space, thus causing my current state. One deep breath and I was completely undone.

I inhaled the most tantalizing aroma I have ever experienced. It was a scent unmatched for sure. The mixture of her strawberry shampoo and her own body’s natural fragrance sent my world into a tail spin! More deep breaths. I could not get enough! No, never enough. My body is experiencing a cadence of electromagnetic impulses from head to toe and I can feel the ripple effect on my skin. Goose bumps are child’s play compared to this pilomotor reflex!

I open my eyes for a split second only to clamp them tightly shut once again. I feel my heart rate increasing, my breathing is becoming erratic, my mouth is dry, and yes there’s a whole lot of twitching going on!

What the hell is happening to me? My body seems to have waged an all out war against itself in the last 8 hours and I am apparently in no position to stop it!
