Slow Simmer – Part 2 – The Redux

    “Bette.”

Bette pretended to be busy at her laptop when Tina came in.

    “I’m busy.”

“Can we talk for a second please?”

“I have nothing to say to you.”

“Can I have a glass of wine?” Tina had already grabbed a glass and was pouring.

Bette eyed the last drop as Tina emptied the bottle.

“Isn’t your fiancé in the car?”

“No. She’s at the hotel.” Tina took a big gulp of wine.

Bette looked back at her laptop’s home screen pretending to scroll as she secretly scanned Tina’s hands.

    “Still no ring?”

    “We didn’t tell Angie yet.”

Bette’s chest tightened, a rattle threatening her throat. She closed her laptop, got up, walking by Tina without a glance.

“Lock the door on your way out.”

“Bette, wait. Please. We need to talk.”

“There’s nothing to talk about. You’re getting married,” Bette said with her back to Tina.

“Fine, let me talk. Just please listen. Ok?”

This is an evil deja vu, Bette thought before stoically turning around. “I poured my fucking soul out on my knees this morning and you just left me there.” Bette may have wanted Tina to feel as small as she did when she was groveling on the floor.

“I am sorry I left the way-”

Bette cut her off. “And now you are standing in my kitchen, finishing my wine, telling me you didn’t tell our daughter yet that you’re engaged. Yet!”

    Tina moved towards Bette.

Bette put her hand up, then shook her forefinger to stop her. “Please. Don’t.”

“I am sorry for leaving like that. But I had to leave.”

Bette continued as if Tina hadn’t spoken. “So my interpretation of…that yet…is that you just answered my question from earlier. That yes, you still intend on marrying her.”

Tina wanted nothing more than to take Bette in her arms. She wanted to pull her head into her chest and tell her how much she loved her. Let me kiss you, let me run my hands down your arms and over your back.

Tina placed her wine glass down and closed the space between them, still hesitant to touch her ex-wife. “I love you, Bette. I do.” Tina’s voice was deep with desperation. She became painstakingly aware that Bette did not flinch when she said she loved her. Her eyes were empty, like two black holes devoid of life.

    1. Okay Tina… get the courage to go talk to Carrie and tell her what the story is … put her back on the plane to where ever she came from and get on with her life and you get on with yours… She is in LA because of you… you said yes when she asked you to marry her… the time has come to fix things… and stop torturing Bette. And stop torturing yourself. Do the right thing and set things so everyone knows where things stand. This game of running and hiding is getting old… you are either all in or you are out of the game.
