    The Extra Room

Bette remembered telling Tina she loved her for the first time over Chinese food. This was way too much, Bette thought. She shook her head to rattle that memory from her mind. Tina recognized the exact moment when Bette’s panic kicked in. Before she could say anything, Bette stood up.

“Ummm…you know what…on second thought, it’s been an excruciatingly long day of traveling and trying to figure out my hotel situation and dealing with KiKi. I didn’t realize how exhausted I am.”

Tina’s face dropped. Bette’s heart sank but she kept talking.

“So, I think I’m just going to go to bed.”

“Oh,” Tina tried not sound too disappointed. “Okay.”

“It’s just I have a lot of work to do over the next few days.”

“You. You don’t have to explain,” Tina reassured.

    “I understand,” Tina smiled sweetly.

They looked into each other’s eyes for half a heartbeat before they both looked away. Bette walked slowly towards the bedroom. She turned around and saw Tina pick up one of the containers.

“Thank you for letting me stay here. You didn’t have…”

    “Yes, I did,” Tina interrupted.

They stared at each other again.

    “Well, I appreciate it. Sincerely.”

Bette turned back around and disappeared into the room. She leaned back on the door with her eyes closed and exhaled. She took a sip of the wine she was still carrying. It was the Ice Wine Tina had given her before. It was good. Bette loved the way the flavors danced over her taste buds. She inhaled it into her soul and then downed the rest trying to calm her nerves.

“Shit,” she said to no one.

“What the fuck am I doing? What the fuck am I doing?” Bette whispered.

Bette stayed against the door for several heartbeats. She glanced around the room and noticed her suitcase was opened on the bench. Her pajamas were laid across the foot of the bed. The lamp was on next to her usual side of the bed and her glasses sat on top of the book she was reading.

Bette took it all in and exhaled loudly.

    ***

Bette had just finished her nightly routine and slid into bed when she heard a knock at the door. She inhaled sharply and waited.

    Comments

    1. Bette is too upset to eat even though there is plenty of food for both of them. This is going to be hard on both of them. Bette needs to at least be gracious enough to join her in her meals when she is at the apartment. Then relax and do the normal things she came on the trip for – work on the exhibit and get things done. Both Bette and Tina are now in the over-thinking phase. Just let things go…. deal with what is for a day or so. Concentrate on a “no drama stay”. Talk when you are ready….

      Thanks for the chapter…

      • They are both dealing with a lot of feelings. And it’s going to be a journey. This chapter was meant to highlight their emotions. And as you can see, they are both all over the place. Tina is trying to give Bette her space. Hopefully, she continues to honor that. And Bette is trying to figure out which is bigger.

    2. Tina is in a sexual frenzy. Get a grip woman. Bette is so hurt she can’t even eat dinner. Oh yes, Kiki and Alice this is a great plan! Not often that I read and shake my head at the same time. What to do? What to do? Really like this story.

    3. What a mess they are both in, so many feelings that Bette couldn’t even eat.

I really hope they can work it out and Alice’s and Kiki’s plan work but i have a feeling it will backfire.

      Looking forward to read more!
