‘Okayyy . . .’ Tina said carefully, her eye on the programme starting on the screen. ‘You done projecting?’
Bette frowned. ‘It’s a sore spot, Tee.’
‘I know. And I love how open we are about it.’ Tina smiled at her wife’s glistening eyes. ‘But remember . . .’ She pointed at the TV – ‘Fake’ – and back at Bette – ‘Real’. Then did it again. ‘Fake . . . Real.’
‘Okay,’ Bette said softly.
And Tina reached for the remote to unmute the show.
Five minutes later, after a debate on the merits of punching people, in which Bette insisted Dani was well within her rights but Tina felt she’d lowered herself, Bette took the remote and pressed pause with Fake Alice and Nat now on the screen.
‘Okay, what is The Graduate?’ she asked Tina. ‘Is that the one with the law firm and that funny little movie star who runs everywhere?’
‘Tom Cruise,’ Tina said. ‘And you’re thinking of The Firm.’
‘So what’s The Graduate?’
‘It’s a Sixties movie where Dustin Hoffman basically destroys a wedding by banging on a glass wall high up in a church.’
‘He’s just graduated and his father’s trying to lock him into a very conventional lifestyle but he doesn’t want it.’
‘He’s in love with Katharine Ross but it’s kind of awkward because he’s also had sex with her mother.’
‘Her name’s Mrs Robinson. There’s a famous song from—’
‘The Mrs Robinson song?’ Bette’s eyes widened. ‘Kit had that record!’
Tina laughed at how fast Bette’s face could completely change. One second she’s completely still, processing information, and the next second she’s beaming, her eyes sparkling with excitement as she continued.
‘. . . and she used to sing that song, which my father forbade because it had a line that took the Lord’s name in vain . . .’
‘“And here’s to you, Mrs Robinson”,’ Tina began to sing. ‘“Jesus loves you more than you will know . . .”’ Bette joined in. ‘“Whoa whoa whoa”.’
They sang together, jiggling in their seats as they forgot the next part of the song, shushing interruptions from Solly, and then went back to the show.
