The Roommates – Fast Forward to 2019: Chapter 19

“She and her wife, they had a disagreement,” said Alice.

“Is that who Bette is? Her wife?” asked the nurse.

    “Yes.”

“I understand. Please tell Bette that she doesn’t have to see Ms. Porter to sign the paperwork. She doesn’t have to visit if she doesn’t want to. Okay?”

    “Okay. I’ll tell her that.”

The nurse smiled at her. “You are a good sister. I know this is hard for you. The sooner we can move Ms. Porter over to the psych ward, the faster we can get her mental health under control.”

“I understand. I’ll talk to Bette,” Alice replied.

After peeking in once more on a sedated Sidney, Alice headed home from the hospital. She sat in the driveway in her mini cooper, her head against the headrest, her eyes closed. She felt completely drained. Sidney was a mess and Bette had been so angry earlier. How was she going to have this conversation with her best friend? How was she going to get her to get the paperwork signed?

She jumped when someone tapped on her window.

    “Fuck!” she yelled.

Tasha was smiling at her. Alice opened the car door and Tasha said, “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to startle you.”

Alice sighed, the sight of Tasha Williams and her warm brown eyes was relaxing. “Hey Tash.”

“I wasn’t sure when you’d be home. And I didn’t want you to be alone tonight.”

Alice stared up at her. “So you’ve just been waiting? How long have you been here?”

“Doesn’t matter.” Tasha reached for Alice’s hand and helped her out of the car. She pulled the blonde woman into a tight hug. Though she hadn’t expected the tears to fall, they did. Tasha just rubbed her back and kissed her forehead.

Tasha led her inside and placed an order for takeout. She drew Alice a warm shower and helped the blonde dress for bed, before holding her tightly. “You’re very sweet,” Alice whispered in the darkness of her room. They were lying in the middle of the queen-sized bed. Tasha was on her back, holding Alice who was on her side.

“I like you, Alice. I know today was hard. I’m sorry you had to see your friend at her worst,” said Tasha.
