The Roommates – Pride & Prejudice: Chapter 3

    Bette nodded. “Yes. Next Monday.”

They were referring to Valerie St. John, the museum’s director. She and Bette had spoken over the phone several times but they’d never had a face-to-face meeting.

It wasn’t long before Bette and Janice arrived at Clancy’s Bistro. Janice assured Richard that they would walk the rest of the way home and gave him the rest of the night off.

“What do you have a taste for?” asked Janice, as she and Bette sat down at a quiet table for two.

“I’m not sure. What’s good here?”

    Janice smiled. “Everything.”

    Bette chuckled. “Everything?”

“Absolutely. But I’m most fond of the rib-eye. It comes with Clancy’s garlic mashed potatoes. And those potatoes are excellent.”

“Well I think I’ve made up my mind,” said Bette with a smile.

Bette and her mother shared small talk as they supped on rib-eye and roast duck. And after convincing her daughter that Clancy’s apple crisp was the best in Manhattan, the duo shared the succulent dessert. As Bette rolled a forkful of cinnamon-spiced baked apple around her tongue, she involuntary closed her eyes, savoring the flavor.

“I’m glad you’re enjoying it,” Janice spoke softly.

Opening her eyes slowly, Bette replied “I really am.”

“Make sure you get some with the ice cream. They make it here with fresh vanilla.”

Bette took another forkful of apple-pastry mixed with fresh vanilla ice cream. She savored this bite as well and when she opened her eyes once again they were heavy with sugar-induced lust.

“This is probably the best thing I’ve ever tasted,” she said.

“I haven’t found anything that tastes better,” Janice replied.

Bette smiled. “Well, maybe we should try to find something. Make it a quest or something.”

“You know, that’s not such a bad idea. We can test out the best desserts in New York.”

Bette’s eyes brightened. “Yeah. Maybe on Sundays we can try new places. We can call it ‘Dessert Sunday’.”

They chuckled at this newly named weekly semi-holiday and continued to share banter throughout the duration of their meal. They shared a quiet walk back to Janice’s apartment, strolling along, enjoying the warmth of the evening air.

    3. Hey MTS, Thanks for another great update. I hope Tina takes Bette’s advice and tries to enjoy her time at home instead of sitting around sulking. I’ve only seen Laurel Holloman in Angel (the tv series) and it was such a different vibe than Tina, but she still rocked the role. PPS!

    4. Geez I thought they were gonna be apart ‘all’ summer not just a week…or is it longer? The way T’s feeling a week equals forever. Love your story as always. Thx.

    5. Hello MTS, Wonderful to have another fine and fabulous chapter from you. I just love how Bette and Tina’s worlds are opening up. Yes, they belong together and each know this but it doesn’t mean that they can’t experience the rest of the world. Bette need’s time to get to know her mother and her life. Good to see that Bette has an ally in Richard. I am sure he can guide her through the ups and downs of the NYC gay scene. And Tina does need to chill out and be herself around her Mom and Dad. There is a sense taht they both love and cherish her. OK being gay might be a shock to them and not the type of information they want broadcast around town but it is who Tina is. I do hope that if they find out then they remember that Tina is their child and deserves their love not matter who she loves. Just so heartfelt and emotional. I love every word. I jst can’t wait to read more of this delicious drama. Thank you so much for continuing this journey with Baby Bette and Tina. Your Loyal Fan.
