“The same day you called me your girlfriend for the first time?”
“I remember,” Bette smiled.
“Well, literally about a minute after we left, Alice called me.”
Bette was fully invested in this story.
“Apparently, she was watching us say goodbye at the door. She waited for you to drive off and then she called me.”
Bette moved a strand of hair that was stuck on Tina’s lip and tucked it behind Tina’s ear. Tina leaned into the touch. She was briefly distracted.
“What did she say?” Bette prodded.
“Oh. Um. Right. So, I…get this. She meets me in the parking lot. Outside of The Planet. And with a very serious face she said, ‘If you break her heart, I will kick your ass.’ Just like that.”
Bette lifted her head a little in disbelief.
“She said what?”
Tina nodded.
“Yep. She told me she’d kick my ass.”
“I can’t believe her. What did you say?”
“Initially I laughed because at that time I only saw Alice as the comedic relief of the group. I thought she was joking. And then I saw the look on her face…”
Tina shook her head. Bette waited.
“She was not joking. She was very serious. So, I told her I was the one who was afraid of my heart being broken.”
Bette furrowed her brow. Tina scrunched her nose. Bette relaxed.
“Because I was completely enamored by you. I had never felt that way about anyone before and definitely not by a woman. Then Alice said something so profound to me. It actually influenced the way I viewed you.”
Bette leaned back. Tina tightened her cradle so she felt supported.
“What did she say?”
“She said, ‘Bette is only a hard ass on the outside.’ And I knew exactly what she meant. I had already started seeing glimpses of your softie side.”
“I am not a softie.”
Bette rolled her eyes.
“No matter what you say, you are the softiest of softies that ever softied.”
Bette rolled her eyes…again. Tina smiled.
“Then what did she say? What happened after your initial shock wore off?”
“Well since I had already started seeing that side of you…the softie side…”
Tina blinked at Bette because she didn’t know how to wink.

Exquisite writing, honestly! I’d like to say so much more, and analyze more but simply do not have enough words as a non-native EN speaker. I could just die and go to heaven with this story of yours.
