    More time at the lake.

     

    “Sometimes, if I turn the phone off” Bette laughs.

     

     

     

    A little later they’re all on the boat, riding the waves.  Melissa is driving while Tina is next to her with Hannah in her lap.  Bette and Donna are sitting at the front, getting splashed by the waves.

     

    “Did you overhear any of Bette talking to Hannah this morning?” Tina asks Melissa.

     

    “Just enough to know it wasn’t any of my business.  Then I got Donna and we got out of there.”  She pauses.  “Is everything ok?”

     

    “Yeah, I guess.  I don’t know.  I overheard enough to make me even more concerned about whatever is going on at her job.”

     

    “Look Tina, I’m sure whatever it is – Bette will handle it.  What I did hear this morning is that she loves you.  You need to focus on that.  I’m sure it will all work out.”

     

    “I hope so.”

     

     

     

    They stop the boat at a small beach.  They all play in the water for a while.  Hannah is in the middle in her life jacket, going from one to another.  She is splashing and laughing and having the best time.

    They load up and head back to the lake house.  Melissa and Donna go to put Hannah down for her nap.  Bette and Tina decide to take a walk.  Hand in hand, they stroll along in complete silence for a few minutes.

     

    Tina is debating whether or not to bring up what she overheard his morning.  She wants to talk about it, but she does not want to add any more pressure to whatever is going on with Bette.

     

    “Go ahead and ask” she hears Bette say.

     

    “Huh?” says, wondering how she read her mind.

     

    “I can see the wheels turning in your head.  Just ask.”

     

    “I don’t know what else to say Bette.  You know I’m here and I want to know what’s going on.  But I also don’t want to add any more problems to whatever you’re going through.  It’s killing me that you can’t talk to me.”

     

    Bette stops walking and takes Tina in her arms.  “And believe me, it’s killing me not to be able to tell you.  But right now, it’s in everyone’s best interest that you don’t know.  But I can tell you, that phone call last night means it’s almost over.”

     

    “Ok.”  Tina hugs Bette tight, tucking her head against Bette’s chest.  “I love you.  And I don’t want to lose you.”

     

    “Hey” Bette places her finger under Tina’s chin and lifts it so they’re looking into each other’s eyes.  “I love you too.  You’re not going to lose me.  Not ever.”  Bette leans down and kisses Tina, gently caressing her lips.

    10. I was a happy camper when I saw that you had posted. It takes me awhile to read but I did and I very much enjoyed this chapter. Bette and Tina are going to make good parents whether they adopt or have one of their own.
