When You Least Expect It – Chapter 13

She spotted her friends the moment she entered the establishment, her eyes happily setting on Angelica who was laughing loudly with Carmen. She hurriedly made her way over to the table, momentarily forgetting why she had gone there in the first place only to be stopped in her tracks by an upset Alice.

The blonde pointed in the direction of the main counter moment she had spotted Bette, her eyes never leaving the brunette’s. Bette glanced towards where Alice was pointing noticing her sister impatiently waiting for her beside the cappuccino machine. She looked back at Alice then sadly at a distracted Angie before making her way towards Kit, a heavy sigh escaping her lips.

"Hey Kit" Bette said as she reached the counter, concern etched all over her tired face. "What’s going on? Is everything okay?"

"You’re not seriously asking me that question" Kit snapped as she dried her hands with a hand towel, "Where have you been?"

"Working" Bette stuffed her hands into the pockets of her trousers, shrugging as she ran her tongue over her teeth. It was obvious that she had been set up and Bette simply took a deep breath to try and calm herself.

"Bette" Kit warned in her big sister way that Bette hated so much. She knew there was no fooling her sister but the younger brunette really wasn’t up for giving in.

"What? I’m serious. Its been really hectic at the gallery lately" She shrugged her shoulders again with growing annoyance, "Look, since there’s obviously no emergency, can I just get my usual to go?"

"Not until you tell me what’s been going on" Kit said stubbornly, exercising restraint not to lean over the counter and whack her sister with the hand towel.

"You’re not seriously about to refuse me service are you?"

Kit raised an eyebrow in challenge, one that her sister knew she could not hope to win. She let out yet another deep sigh.

"Fine. Tina and I had a fight"

"There we go" Kit said proudly, "Now we’re getting somewhere"

Bette however was quick to try and nip the conversation in the bud. She wasn’t up for talking about Tina, "It was nothing though. Just a stupid little fight"
