When You Least Expect It – Chapter 13

"You love that baby girl over there right?" She gestured over to the table where Angelica was being passed around by her aunts. Bette smiled at the sound of Angie’s laughter, nodding in response to her sister’s question to which Kit continued. "And I know you love her mother just as much so why not try to fix things between you two? Why are you so bent on making a mess of things?"

Bette sighed, "I’m not trying to Kit. I just . . I just don’t know"

"You obviously miss her, I can see it on your face. I know what she said was messed up but she’s been trying to apologize. She made a mistake Bette, we all make mistakes. Stop punishing her and just talk to her, let her explain"

Another deep sigh escaped Bette’s lips. It seemed as though she was full of them, "You’re probably right"

Kit turned her head so that her ear faced her sister and she cupped it as if she had trouble hearing the younger Porter, "What was that? Did you say probably?"

A smile and a small laugh slipped through Bette’s lips, Kit was grateful for it. "Okay, you’re exactly right"

"Much better" Kit smiled as she grabbed an empty tray being passed to her by one of her waitresses. She wiped it down and cleared it of any crumbs, glancing up in time to see Alice hurriedly making her way over. "Incoming"

Bette turned around just as Alice held out Angie in her face.

    "Take her and fix this"

"What?" Bette asked with confusion as she took the baby girl in her arms.

"I was supposed to take Angie home to Tina in a half hour but something came up"

"Oh really?" Bette asked intrigued as she shifted Angie in her arms, moving her head in the opposite direction of the curious child. She grabbed Angie’s tiny little hand before she had the chance to tug on Bette’s hoop earrings. "Is everything okay?"

"Um . . yeah" Alice fidgeted nervously, making it obvious she hadn’t thought out that far ahead in her plan to reunite her two friends. "I just um . . Dana has this uh thing with . ."

"Tennis?" Bette offered helpfully, an eyebrow raised in amusement.

Alice snapped her fingers with a smirk, "Exactly so we gotta go. Her stuff is over there by Carmen and Shane. Tell Tina I’m sorry when you see her"

With that, the energetic blonde was gone. She hurriedly made her way to her son and her wife, gathering them both up quickly and making a hasty exit out of the cafe.

"Well that did not seem like a setup at all" Bette turned around and rolled her eyes at her chuckling sister.

"At least she didn’t make it awkward" Kit chuckled as she lightly grabbed one of Angelica’s tiny hands and gently shook it.

"I missed you so much pretty girl" Bette offered a tender kiss to Angelica’s temple, breathing in her sweet baby scent before setting her down on the edge of the counter. "You’ve been a good girl for mommy?"

An instant smile spread across Angelica’s chubby cheeks, revealing a shiny set of gums. Bette couldn’t help but smile back, even as Angie’s baby hands slapped her cheeks. She welcomed it in fact and her smile widened.

"He hasn’t met her yet, you know" Kit cut into Bette’s blissful moment she had been sharing with Angie, hating to do so but figuring it was best that Bette knew.

Bette didn’t have to ask who "he" was and simply nodded with the information, unsure exactly of what to say. She wasn’t sure if she was happy by the fact or not.

"Just hear her out Bette. I’m sure you two can work things out and tackle any other situation that comes after"

Bette smiled tenderly at Angelica and leaned in for a sweet kiss to the baby’s forehead before picking her back up. She held Angie close to her body and nodded at her sister, knowing that her already long day was just about to get a whole lot longer.

She leaned over the counter and placed a sweet kiss on Kit’s cheek, "I’ll see you tomorrow"
