The L Word Deconstructed: Episodes 1.01 and 1.02

July 23, 2014 By Jacky 4 Comments

Day 5 (Sunday, October 19th, 2003)

Jenny went out to her studio to sleep with Tim going out to join her and see if she is okay after last night.

So ends what should be the Episode 101 sequence as we move ahead in time with a b-roll montage of the city.  Part of the montage includes the Metro Bus heading for Downtown and a lady bicycling past the Holiday Motel.

Skipped here is Sonya cleaning up Bette and Tina’s house.

Day 6 (Monday, October 20th, 2003)

Dana and Tina exercise together at a fitness center where Luca works as the trainer on the exercise bikes.  Tina brings up having to wait another month before the next insemination, which would mean mid-to-late November, 2003.  Dana and Tina are basically on the verge of quitting the fitness center anyway with Dana likely not handling her attraction to Luca as well as already having a country club to train at (which we’ll see in Episode 103), plus Tina eventually halting her going there as well, giving Dana no one to talk to while there.

Jenny arrives at The Planet, a little unsure about being there, but is invited over to Tina’s table.  Tina has a salad.  This is later in the day, putting Tina and Dana’s time at the fitness center as being earlier that morning.

Now at the table with Tina, Alice, Dana, and Shane, Jenny talks about an instructor and a program called All-Write.  Alice mentions LA Magazine where she works and also mentions UCLA directly.  This is all about Jenny wanting to improve her writing skills.  This also confirms UCLA’s existence in the L-Universe, along with Southern Cal and of course, CU, all of which are Pac-10 rivals together in swimming & diving.  Jenny is not interested in going back to school, having just finished up at Chicago which leads to Marina being brought into the discussion and Alice mentioning Marina being part of a reading group.  “You guys met the other night” says Alice, confirming this as Monday the 20th.  Notice Tina’s expression as she looks over at Alice upon Marina joining.  Also notice Dana’s expression towards Alice.  Shane, confirming Marina’s reputation as a hunter-gatherer of lovers (and as revealed in Episode 103, knowing from personal experience) is the first to announce her departure from the table, leading to the others doing the same.  It is heavily implied here that this is not the first time Marina has worked on seducing someone, including someone already in a relationship.

It is approximately 2 PM as Jenny and Marina talk about not being big coffee drinkers as Jenny mentions wanting to be home in time for Tim’s arrival from work which should be 5 PM.  Marina walks Jenny to Tim’s Firebird.  Marina acknowledges the car being a muscle car and considering it “sexy.”  Marina invites Jenny to Radar, which is held on Tuesday Nights.  Marina also asks Jenny to call her, implying that Jenny has Marina’s number already.  If the phone numbers were exchanged it would have been between Alice leaving Jenny to Marina during the party and the first kiss.  Otherwise, it could be a reference to wanting Jenny to call her at The Planet, which would likely be listed in the phone book.

Day 7 (Tuesday, October 21st, 2003)

This is definitely the next day with Tina having changed outfits as she and Bette talk with Jean-Paul about a sperm donation that will not end well.  Jean-Paul is a sculptor, is very healthy, and apparently sexually active, claiming that he must have children “all over the world.”

“The penis, the pussy, the baby…wfffh!”

This immediately leads to Bette and Tina at The Planet, likely going straight there from Jean-Paul’s studio as they share the experience with Alice, Shane, and Dana.  The tension between Bette and Tina is now beginning to slowly grow with the lack of a suitable sperm donor.

In the DVD commentary, Ilene and Jennifer mention a “fight scene” between Bette and Tina which was cut for time consideration.  This fight is likely a heated argument that occurs just outside The Planet upon Bette and Tina exiting.  This would also further explain Alice’s, “Are you two still fighting?” to Tina when they arrive at the La Boite restaurant, which with the way this timeline is configurated is weeks later.

A quick shot of Bodhi Tree Bookstore, which is located on Melrose Avenue.  The store would close down on December 31st, 2011, after 40+ years of business.

Onto Tuesday Evening at Tim and Jenny’s as Randy is there with Tim to go over notes for an upcoming meet.  Jenny is dressed up, with Tim’s insistance that she go to The Planet’s Radar party.  “I’m making her go,” as Tim will later claim to Randy upon Jenny leaving.  According to Randy, CU’s team has Mary and Trish (the same Trish from earlier), implying that they will have them as an advantage in their upcoming meet, presumably against Southern Cal, or “USC.”

The Radar Party is held on Tuesday Nights at The Planet and as Jenny discovers, is an all-woman party.  Harrison provides one of the few exceptions to the rule as he is there with Dana, Alice, Shane, and Tina.  The character listed as “Gay Girl” and who will be referred to here simply as Gay (which is an actual name, both first and last) is in the background already checking Jenny out as she and Marina meet.

The woman Dana is checking out while with Harrison is Renee (last name revealed as Moi in Episode 103).  Kit is there, DJ’ing and Marina mentions Kit hosting a Poetry Night at The Planet though when or how often is not discussed.  Renee winds up going to Shane which disappoints Dana and also leads to the Nipple Confidence discussion.  Jenny will soon depart from all this, having only been there for a few minutes, tops.  Shane and Renee are off playing pool as there is a pool table there, at least during the evening.

As Jenny dismisses Gay’s advances and leaves The Planet back toward home, or her studio in the backyard, she will eventually walk by Marcy, Marnie, and Marti who are talking with a man.  It’s possible the 3M’s are there to lecture him about men not usually being welcome at the Radar Party unless, like Harrison they are an exception to the rule, which this gentleman apparently is not.

Kace, I watched the episodes that had Kit’s car shown but I couldn’t see all of the rear end so I can’t be accurate about the year but you are right in that it is a 1971 or 1972 Chevrolet Impala four door sedan. Hope that helps.
