The L Word Deconstructed: Episodes 1.01 and 1.02

July 23, 2014 By Jacky 4 Comments

Day 8 (Wednesday, October 22nd, 2003)

Jenny is at work at Laurelwood Farms Market with Eduardo still training her as the cashier.  The store appears to be rather small.  Marina arrives, wanting to see Jenny check her out.  Jenny apologizes for “last night,” confirming this as the day after Radar.  Whatever Marina buys, the total is $54.05 which would include the California sales tax.  Marina invites Jenny to her reading group which is “one week from Monday.”  That would place the reading group meeting on Monday, November 3rd, 2003, which would advance the timeline past Halloween (Friday, October 31st, 2003).  No word at this point on how often the group meets.  Possibly the first Monday of each month.

Day 9 (Sunday, November 2nd, 2003)

Skipping ahead quite a bit in the timeline here as we are now just past Halloween and with this being a Sunday, on the heels of what was probably a successful meet for CU’s women’s swim team against the Southern Cal Women Of Troy.  This get-together may indeed be a celebration of the team doing well.

With Tim and Jenny is another couple, Mark (not to confused with Mark Wayland from Season 2) and Susan as well as Randy and his girlfriend, Carolyn.  Mark and Susan invite Tim and Jenny for game night which is once a month and also tomorrow (Monday, November 3rd, 2003).  They will be unable to attend as Jenny has already committed to joining Marina for her reading group which is also once a month, as Jenny confirms.  This means Game Night and Reading Group Night will always be a scheduling conflict.  Susan has mentioned that Game Night is usually 5 couples, meaning Tim and Jenny would have made it 6.  No word on who the other 3 couples are, since Mark & Susan and also Randy & Carolyn would represent 2 of the 5 couple participants.

Day 10 (Monday, November 3rd, 2003)

Bette arrives early from work at the CAC, despite show preparations (most likely the same event/exhibit that Annie is curating).  Bette claims that Annie has things “under control.”  Tina is leaving to exercise off some stress, implying a growing disconnect between Bette and Tina.

While Tina is off to train at the fitness center, Jenny and Marina are wrapping up their get-together with the reading group which includes Carolyn See.

A quick note about who Carolyn See is.  Carolyn is a writer whose stories have mostly centered around Los Angeles.  She is a native of the area, makes her home there (specifically in Pacific Palisades) and is an adjunct professor of English at UCLA.  Had Jenny gone with the UCLA option presented to her earlier in the episode, it’s possible that she could have wound up under Carolyn’s wing in terms of becoming a better writer.  Carolyn not only published books under the Carolyn See name, but also under the name Monica Highland, which is a pseudonym she shared with her daughter, Lisa and also with John Epsey who passed away in 2000 (or roughly 3 years prior to this moment).  Chances are, with Carolyn being part of this reading group it is arguably one of the more noteworthy reading groups in the Greater Los Angeles Area under Carolyn’s influence.

The address number above the front door appears to be 3451, though it is blurry.  What street is uncertain.  For what it’s worth, Sunset Boulevard in the West starts in the Pacific Palisades area, which means if the reading group is there, closer to where Carolyn See lives, then the drive back to North Genessee would still be pretty direct.  Marina drives Jenny there and back, in her convertible car (car experts, feel free to chime in on what vehicle it is).

Meanwhile, Luca compliments Tina with Tina suddenly realizing she wants to be home.  Luca offers private exercise sessions to Tina, but that will apparently lead to Tina declining since Luca is never seen on screen again.  Also, Tina never exercising there again.  It’s likely Tina quit the center after this encounter.

Marina drops Jenny off at her home.  Presumably, moments later, Tina arrives at her home next door where Bette has fallen asleep while reading.  That brings us to the end of this somewhat eventful Monday.

Day 11 (Tuesday, November 18th, 2003)

15 days appear to lapse between the previous day of the narrative and this day, skipping through time.  This helps pass the time as the tensions build between Bette and Tina as well as Marina and Jenny.

Tina is scheduled to meet with Dan Foxworthy alone, but would rather have Bette go with her after Bette agrees to see him again with Tina.  Bette’s reaction indicates that she did not know about Tina already scheduling a session with Dr. Foxworthy prior to this moment.  The meeting is scheduled for 3:15 PM, the next day (Wednesday, November 18th, 2003).

Later in the evening, the setting is a restaurant.  The restaurant will later be revealed to be called La Boite, which research indicates is the name of a restaurant in New York City.  For the sake of argument, let’s just go with this being the Los Angeles version.  If so, European and French cuisine is the theme in terms of food.

At one of the tables is a double date with Randy and Carolyn on one side and Tim and Jenny on the other.  Soon arriving are the Group Of Friends which includes Alice, Tina, Bette, Dana, Shane, and Marina.  The tension between Bette and Tina is there with Alice asking Tina about them, “still fighting.”  This would imply that between the Jean-Paul moment back on Tuesday, October 21st and now, Bette and Tina’s relationship has been on a downswing, combined with still being unable to find a donor.

A kinda funny moment as one of the extras, a bald man with a rocking mustache appears to be checking out Marina from behind.  Randy considers Marina, “hot,” with a brief discussion over her sexuality.  Alice, who is unknown to Randy is referred to as having a “cute haircut.”  Carolyn meanwhile likes “the one who looks like a rockstar,” referencing Shane.  Also, Randy prefers whatever he is eating to be grilled in order to deal with his weight issues.

Jenny meets up with Marina in the bathroom, giving us our 3rd significant bathroom moment of the episode and the 2nd involving these two.  The attraction between the two is obvious though Jenny is still somewhat trying to fight it.

Kace, I watched the episodes that had Kit’s car shown but I couldn’t see all of the rear end so I can’t be accurate about the year but you are right in that it is a 1971 or 1972 Chevrolet Impala four door sedan. Hope that helps.
