The L Word Deconstructed: Episodes 1.01 and 1.02

July 23, 2014 By Jacky 4 Comments

Day 12 (Wednesday, November 19th, 2003)

Tim is in a white tank top and drenched in sweat, as it will become apparent later that he has been practicing his basketball skills for an upcoming faculty basketball game.  He returns with a pair of cups of coffee from The Planet, one for himself and the other for Jenny who is writing in her studio.  This means that Tim is well aware of The Planet, yet somehow has never noticed Dana, who also frequents the establishment, despite being a “huge fan.”  This in itself is another big hint at Tim’s aloofness.

Jenny is typing on what appears to be a Macbook as Tim interrupts with some reading aloud of her typing, annoying her and causing Tim to be annoyed in turn as he storms off to pout in the house.  Jenny enters the house and talks with Tim, apologizing.  Tim brings up that Jenny’s job is something that she wanted.  This could be an indication that Tim never required her to get one as he just wanted her there.  As they start to make up from the tension, Marina calls Jenny.  Marina has invited Jenny for dinner on Saturday Night (November 22nd, 2003).  Tim will be busy as he has a “basketball game with the department head” that evening.  This pays off all the sweat from Tim earlier.  This also means that he should probably shower soon.

Approximately 3:15 PM, Tina has arrived at Dan’s for the session.  Bette is not there yet, but will arrive soon enough.  Bette’s tardiness is explained by Bette as having found “the perfect donor” in the form of Marcus Allenwood.  Marcus is an artist, which qualifies well for Bette’s standards, and his work has been selected for “the next Whitney” by Annie.  This means Annie has some reach as a curator, along with being one of Bette’s friends from the artworld.

The Whitney is short for the Whitney Museum Of American Art, located in New York City.  it is possible that Annie is on her way back to New York City, after having spent some time in the Los Angeles artworld, getting to know Bette (and probably to a lesser extent, Tina).  Bette also mentions that Marcus has already sired a child, meaning he has the capability to bring children into the world.  Tina is unhappy, having not met with Marcus herself as the attempts to find a donor had always been a team effort (though that could be a bit murky when it comes to Sean being initially chosen).  Bette informs Tina that she will meet Marcus “tomorrow” at 11 AM.  The next day, Marcus will depart for Cologne, Germany as part of a group show.  Bette’s idea is to have Marcus donate the sperm and have it “on ice” for when Tina is next ovulating, thus the Cryobank coming into play.  Tina will appear to be next ovulating this coming Saturday.

Day 13 (Thursday, November 20th, 2003)

Approximately 11 AM.  Marcus arrives to meet Tina while Bette is away at work at the CAC, preparing for Laurie Papou.  At this point, Annie may be on her way back to New York City.  Tina’s reaction to meeting Marcus is noteworthy, though it isn’t automatically certain whether it’s due to Marcus being rather large or his skin tone.  Marcus appears to be understanding and rather easy going about all this.

Tina and Marcus arrive at the Los Angeles Cryobank.  This could be an analog to the California Cryobank, which is located on La Grange Avenue in Los Angeles, South of Santa Monica Boulevard and West/Southwest of the San Diego Freeway in West Los Angeles.  If so, that means that Tina and Marcus would have drove West on Santa Monica Boulevard and going through Beverly Hills before turning South on South Barrington Avenue in West LA and arriving at La Grange Avenue.  This would make the drive from Bette & Tina’s to the Cryobank roughly half an hour.

Tina is so flustered that she slightly mispronounces her last name, Kennard with a slurred “Kennerd” sound.  Realistically, this could have been an acting goof, but in terms of storyline, it perfectly fits Tina’s mindset at this point as she doesn’t appear to be thinking straight from all the apprehension she is feeling.  Marcus has health forms and confirms being recently HIV tested.  The lady Tina and Marcus talk with is referred to in the credits as Technician.  Technician, or “Techie” as she’ll now be known places more apprehension and anxiety on Tina by mentioning the possibility of a “c-section” birth instead the more conventional birth, given Marcus Allenwood’s size.

“C-Section” is short for Caesarean Section and involves doctors performing incisions through the mother’s abdomen and uterus.  Basically a combination of a laparotomy and hysterotomy.  The result for the mother (aside from the birth of course) is looking down at a scar shaped like the letter T.  Tina apparently finds this idea frightening.

Later in the evening, The Planet has closed with no evening party scheduled.  Bette arrives after receiving a “vague, but urgent message from Alice.”  This, along with Tina and Dana’s reaction to Alice to bringing Marina over to talk with Jenny indicates that Alice may have a slight obsession with drama.  Alice, Dana, and Marina have been hanging out as the staff works on closing things down for the night while Tina waits, strumming through a book.  This leads to Bette and Tina discussing their issues.  Bette mentions bringing the up the idea of an “African-American” donor at the beginning, but this also seems to contradict Bette’s longing for Sean (who doesn’t appear to be African-American) to be the one and for 6 months, Sean was the occasional go-to guy, which may well explain Tina’s confusion over all this, along with the apprehension, and perhaps Bette’s own confusion over Tina’s apprehension.  Tina admits her uncertainty of being able to be a mother to a biracial child.  This one admission seems to serve as a subtle or subliminal seed for Bette when The War Of Portards commences in Season 3 over baby Angelica.  However, that’s much later on.  Now would be a good time to note that Bette (just like the actress Jennifer Beals portraying her) is also biracial, which we will learn is from a black father (Melvin, who is introduced in Episode 106) and a white mother.  Also worth noting is that Kit (Bette’s sister) is black, also from Melvin as a father, but a black mother from a previous relationship Melvin had prior to being with Bette’s mother.

Day 14 (Friday, November 21st, 2003)

Bette and Tina meet with Dan Foxworthy in what appears to be a rushed appointment.  The result of this is Bette’s notion that she and Tina are not ready to start a family.  This seems to have an adverse effect on Tina, as will be revealed on Saturday.

Kace, I watched the episodes that had Kit’s car shown but I couldn’t see all of the rear end so I can’t be accurate about the year but you are right in that it is a 1971 or 1972 Chevrolet Impala four door sedan. Hope that helps.
