This particular storyline was influenced by events that happened to McKee’s gay friends. Callie’s mother (Gina Gallego) is a very religious woman and her presence at the wedding is a surprise to Callie who was looking at her mother for some sense of encouragement, support, approval and acceptance.

Ultimately, Callie has to deal with the backlash from her mother’s attitude toward the wedding and her granddaughter but the viewers still got a long-awaited happy ending when Callie and Arizona were married in a garden by Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), with many of the hospital’s staff in attendance.
