    An Epistolary Affair (Complete work)

I’m so sorry that I can’t tell you more about her whereabouts, but seeing how close you both are, I am convinced that she will be in touch very soon.
T, I am fully aware that you might feel unsettled and angry at me. A woman you have never seen in your life and who suddenly knows so much about you and your feelings. And I would completely understand if you decided to throw this letter away, and never pursue this correspondence. I can only hope that you will decide against it, because there are many things I want to tell you.
I want to tell you all I can see from my windows.
I want to tell you what every day is like in the most romantic city in the world.
I want to tell you that, yes T, Paris is every bit as beautiful as people who have been there say it is.
… And I want to tell you that for me it wasn’t a key… It was a mixed tape…
I was 16, and his name was Matthew. We had been going out for several weeks. At the time, I was fully aware of my sexual preferences, but like you, I wanted to “fit in”. Not because of society-induced reasons, I was proud of who I was, and nothing could have had me deny myself.
    … Nothing except my father.
A severe and authoritarian man whose high expectations had already driven his elder daughter away, and who was repeating the same mistakes with the younger.
I had always tried to please him in every possible way, and had gotten to the point where I just wanted to be left alone.
Having a boyfriend had granted me that wish.
Matthew was handsome, well-educated, and from one of the most wealthy families in Philadelphia. He was kind and attentive, and I liked him a lot, so I just went along with it.
That was until the mixed tape…
He gave it to me one evening, telling me how he had picked each and every song carefully, thinking about me while he had, and hoping I would feel the same.
    And then it happened…
The three words… These three fateful words that would forever have the amazing power to change anybody’s life.
Well that day, they changed mine… Not in that universal way that most people spend their lives waiting for, but for the best nonetheless.
The moment I heard the words, I realized that I longed to hear them. And I knew that someday, and from the right person, those words would have the amazing power to change MY life.

    1. I had not read this story when it was first posted. It was before I knew of the site. I feel blessed that it was brought to my attention.
Letter writing of all sorts is a special genre for me. It is easy to bare the soul in a letter, easy to fall in love through a letter, and the way you two have handled this process is incredible to say the least. You have tapped into something that I can’t describe.

But these lines: “I’m sorry for this outburst, especially as I finish this letter, but I feel like I can tell you anything. And I know it’s silly, but I already feel better for having confided in you. How is it that you, that I know through your words only, can make me feel calmer than anyone has ever been able to? Could it be that connection again? … Will we ever know?…” Oh wow…yep, been there…just incredible.

      Thank you.
