Can we get it back – Chapter 12

As they approach the nurses station in the ICU, Angie takes her mama T’s hand. She’s scared and anxious.

“It’s okay sweetie. She’s okay.” Tina whispers as she gently squeezes Angie’s hand for comfort.

A nurse shows them into the room and then leaves.

There on the bed, Bette is sleeping, or it seems like she’s sleeping. So peaceful, Tina thinks. Angie walks over to the bedside.

“Hi, mama B. Me and mama T is here. You need to be okay.” Angie whispers down at the mom. Tina stops behind Angie and places her arm lovingly around Angie’s shoulder. Right then a doctor comes in.

“Oh hi, didn’t know anyone was here so early. I am Dr. Matt Bennett. I was the one operating on Ms. Porter yesterday.” » He says and smiles at Tina and Angie.

“Hi, Dr. Bennett, I’m Tina, her partner and this is our daughter Angie.” Tina says and smiles back.

“Nice to meet you. I’m just in here doing a quick check. The surgery went well, so she should be okay without any damage to anything. She has to wake up and start talking to be 100% sure, but I believe were in the clear.” Dr. Bennett says.

“Thank you so much. Can I ask you something?” Tina asks.

“Sure, go ahead.” Dr. Bennett says while reading Bette’s chart at the end of the bed.

“She was supposed to start radiation in about two weeks’ time as a continuous treatment from the last surgery. How will this surgery affect her in that?” Tina asks.

“Well, radiation have to wait a week or two. I have informed Dr. Stenton and the team that is involved in that. So they know about this incident.” Dr. Bennett informs.

    “Ah, okay, good.” Tina replies.

The doctor checks the chart and write something on it, then leaves on to the next patient of his.

“Now, we just wait for her to wake up.” Tina says as she takes a seat on one of the chairs next to the bed. Angie sits down in the one next to it. It takes almost two hours after the doctor left before Bette woke up. She opens her eyes but doesn’t say anything. Tears fill up her eyes and she’s blinking to clear them. She can hear Tina and Angie talking softly beside her.

    1. Whew….a small stroke.. okay… no damage. That’s good.. Another surgery and more recovery time. That’s about as good as it gets under the circumstances. I feel like Shane…just put my heart in my throat when I heard it. Hopefully Bette is on the road to recovery.

Poor Bette – thought two weeks was a dream. At least Bette will now believe that Tina really is here for her. Now its on the road to recovery and then the road to reconciliation…

Great Story….but I need my heart pills close for the drama you write. I think that’s a good thing. Keep it up.

    2. That was a close call. I feared that the second surgery affected Bette’s memory or ability to speak.
She still has a long way to go.

Won’t be easy for the family to settle to something like normalcy.
