Chapter 1 – List and More List
Bette: Let’s move on to the next room. Let’s do your room Angie and then do Daniel’s room so they will be ready for you guys.
Tina: I’m going to strip the bed in our room and get our soiled towels.
After entering Angie’s room. They proceeded to make the bed.
Bette: Angie, last week it came to your mom’s attention that you do not know how to drive. Have you ever driven?
Angie: Well, Grandma Mary taught me to drive her old truck on her ranch a couple of summers ago. It was so much fun. It’s a 1962 International pickup with a stick shift. I’ve never seen a vehicle with a stick shift before or since. But Grandma says that most cars in the 50’s were stick shift.
Bette: Wow. Good for you! I wonder if she would teach me? Oh well. What I was leading up to is that you need to get your driver’s license before you leave for New Haven. And we, the family are in a bit of a time crunch. You and Tina will be flying to New York a week from this evening to get your fall and winter wardrobe sorted out. You two will be flying on Helena’s corporate jet to New York and coming back commercial. I already have made plane reservations for your return flight.
Angie: Oh my god! Really? A private jet? This is so exciting.
Bette: Well, they offered and we accepted. Now when you are in New York, I need for you to work with your mom and get things done as quickly and efficiently as possible. You two will need to go through your closet and determine what you can use at school and what needs to be shipped here and what needs to be disposed of. If there are clothes which do not fit or you have not worn in years or you wouldn’t wear on any occasion, they need to be disposed of. I would expect that is going to be a majority of your closet. Now remember what the weather is in New England – cool fall, cold winters and cool spring. Unless you join a sorority, you will not need a lot of dressy clothes. You need some, but not a lot. You need good quality, comfortable casual clothes. After you and your mom evaluate what you have, you two will go shopping to get what you need. In this first year, you do not need a lot of different outfits. If you are like most freshman, you will have about three or four outfits which will become your uniform which you will wear every day to class and hanging around the dorm. Then you will have 3 or 4 somewhat dressy outfits for dates and parties. And then you will have some comfort clothes for studying and staying indoors when there is bad weather. You need about four or five pair of shoes total. One or two pair which are for dressy occasions, two pair for every day, one pair for snow and rain, and some house shoes. If you join a sorority, then we will have to revamp your wardrobe. You will need a variety of sweaters and jeans mostly. If you need more, then Christmas is coming and we will make a reassessment then.
