    Chapter 16

The explosion of fire was immediate and orchestrated, a calculated symphony of destruction.

The ground hissed and caught almost instantly, thin, glistening trails of accelerant had been poured with precision, branching like veins across the compacted dirt.

The contents of the jerrycans had turned the earth into a map of ruin, feeding the fire with greedy fingers. One slick path snaked beneath the tool store; another curled toward the holding pens, flames chasing it like a predator.

Where the liquid had soaked deepest, the blaze surged higher, leaping with a wicked intelligence, drawn to weakness and dry timber.

It wasn’t just fire, it was Alive. Intent and deliberate. Unforgiving. And it moved with terrifying purpose.

It flared to life behind the lower water tanks. It erupted near the feed store. Flames leapt skyward in violent orange arcs seemingly reaping the night open with searing jets of heat.

In an instant, the air was split by the sharp crackle of combusting dry brush, the whoosh of accelerant-fuelled ignition, and the terrified trumpeting of elephants in the distance.

Bette flinched as heat rolled over her, the temperature rising like a wave crashing through the compound. A wash of smoke and chemical stench punched into her lungs, burnt hay, rubber, diesel, and something older, more organic.

    The smell of loss.

Light shattered the darkness, not with warmth but with violence. Fire danced across the compound in synchronized lines, consuming everything it could reach. Shadows leapt and spun against walls and tree trunks, turning familiar shapes into grotesque silhouettes. Roofs caught first, the dry, weathered thatch blazing like paper, and then the fencing, the wooden crates, the tarp-covered shelters.

A distant shed blew out with a low thud, the metal buckling inward as heat trapped inside found no escape. Sparks shot skyward, carried on the wind like warning flares to nowhere.

Bette stood at the eye of the inferno, unmoving, her fists clenched at her sides. The fire cast an unholy glow on her face, highlighting the hard line of her jaw and the barely veiled grief in her eyes. Chang stood across from her, basking in the chaos like a conductor watching his orchestra rise to crescendo.

“There,” he said over the roar, voice thick with smoke and satisfaction. “I kept my promise.”

    1. Woah!! Great chapter! I fear this was only the beginning. Hope they come through ahead of the mayhem started by Chang soon. Those thughs have to come down the very sore looser in this battle. Maybe Wilson and his people noticed something and can help catch Chang and this soldiers.
