    Chapter 16

    They smile at each other.

(Bette) And I’m not saying it with any expectation of what that means for the future. As a promise of anything. I want to tell you because it’s how I feel, and I want you to know it

Tina studies her for a moment.

(Tina) That’s the only difference it would make for you, if we were to call it a relationship? That we’d be free to talk about how we feel about each other?

    (Bette) Yes, nothing else

Tina nods as she considers this.

(Bette) I think losing the casual label is a big thing for you?

(Tina sighs) It is. And it’s very important to you? That we’d describe what we’re doing as a relationship?

    Bette looks back at her.

(Bette) It is. I don’t know if that seems trivial, considering I’m not suggesting to really change anything else. But I don’t think you’re supposed to feel like this in a casual arrangement

They smile at each other, holding each other’s gaze for a moment.

(Bette) What is it for you? Why is calling it casual so important?

Tina looks downwards and frowns as she thinks this over.

(Tina) It’s a way of protecting against a situation drifting towards something I don’t want

    She looks to Bette.

(Tina) And I know you’re saying that we could do it differently, but it just feels dangerous to me. To step outside of that

(Bette) And what is it you’re trying to avoid? Is it commitment?

(Tina) Commitment, looking to the future, making promises. I think other people can find excitement in those things, but when I think about the idea of planning for a future with someone, every part of me is just screaming to run

Tina looks at her for a moment, and then cringes.

    (Tina) Even with you

    Bette smiles.

(Bette) It’s OK, that’s not really news to me

    They smile at each other.

(Bette) Do you have an idea of why you feel like that?

(Tina sighs) Who the fuck knows

Bette laughs and Tina smiles over at her.

(Tina) It’s just something I’ve accepted about myself. And so I stick to casual arrangements, so I can avoid it altogether

    She looks over to Bette.

    1. Okay…. an exclusive relationship which is not necessarily going anywhere? Whatever works. Glad they talked and worked it out. I’m not sure what they have decided anything except for the labels which represent what they are already experiencing and to continue and see where this goes. There are no expectations for the future. But there is an underlying desire that they will do the future together whatever that is.

      Thanks for the chapter…

    2. Wow, funny thing! They both feel the same way, want the same things. They just needed to express them. Why is Tina so dead set about a commitment ? Who hurt her so much? Glad to see your post. Keep them coming!

    3. Whew! What a cliff hanger you left us in 15. A new flavor to the Bette and Tina story is really appreciated!

As an aside, I wish you had added health issues/STDs as support for Bette’s exclusivity request. I don’t think we talk about or address STDs. Not all partners are “safe”. Remember we are a collection of all of our active partners.

Keep writing I really like you stories!
