Chapter 19 – The Wilkins and the Prestons

Bette: The only profession which has a higher failure rate of marriages is the military. And they have pretty much the same problem. The families being separated for long periods of time. And then they are moving about every two or three years.

Tina: Well, now that I have had 6 months out of the profession, I promise you that I will not go back to it. It was a wonderful experience, but I’m done with that life.

Bette: Were you unhappy with your life as a producer?

Tina:  No, I loved the job while was doing it. But I think I got caught up in the lights, and the glamour. I missed a lot while I was working with Angie growing up. But you know when you are in the thick of things, you do not exactly have the best view of what is going on. It’s only when you have a little distance from it do you see the price you are paying to be in that profession. It was a handsome salary and, in a way, it was very gratifying, but I’m not sure I would have chosen to be in it had I known+ how much time I would spend doing my job and being away from my family. But it’s done now, and hind sight is 20/20. And thanks to Melvin, I really didn’t need that handsome salary. Of course, I did not know that while I was earning it. Funny how things work.

Bette: Yeah, well my dear, you are right. It’s done now. We are where we are because of it. We might be here anyway, but we would have been another year before we would have gotten here to Los Angeles area. So, that’s a good thing. Everything always works out. I’m just glad you are happy with what you’re doing now. I’m satisfied with what I am doing. But I do not think, I’m going to last ten years at this. I just hope I can last until Daniel graduates from high school.

Tina: Why do you say that?

Bette: Well, we have about 6 more years for Daniel to finish high school. I just find myself wanting to be at home with you sometimes. And it always happens when I’m on my way to teach my next class. I get this desire that I should be heading for my car to come home to you. But I go on to class and then I head home to you.
