Chapter 2
“So, Eric, what are your plans for after school?” asked my dad.
“Well sir, I’m hoping to study business in college, then come home and help dad run the family firm.” Eric replied with a smile on his face.
At this I could see mom’s eyes light up. I watched her as she mapped out my entire future off that one statement from Eric. The wedding, the 2.4 kids, my mom playing queen bee as the mother-in-law to the town’s latest business tycoon. Yes, in moms eyes the disappointment child finally had prospects…puke.
“Christina, answer the man. Christina!”
My attention snapped back to the table with all eyes on me.
“Oh, sorry. What’d I miss?
“My dad asked what your plans for after graduation were.” Smiled Eric.
Now, do I express genuine plans and disappoint the folks or, do I parrot whatever I think will keep me in the good books at least until breakfast…
“Um, actually, I would like to study film production at college sir.” Mama always said honesty was the best policy. “I just can’t decide whether it should be NYU or UCLA.” I said shrugging.
Out the corner of my eye I’m sure I saw steam coming from my mom’s ears, clearly my dad thought an explosive response was also imminent as he quickly changed the subject.
“So, Jack, any plans to take the boat out again?”
And that was that dad was deep in plans for fishing trips with Eric’s dad for the rest of the evening, and mom, ever the diplomat talked of bake sales and charity events to Eric’s mom, putting my punishment on the back burner…

It had been three weeks since the dinner from hell, and I was increasingly unnerved. Mom hadn’t blown a gasket as had been expected the minute Eric and his parents had left, she simply went into the kitchen and started clearing up. For days after I walked on eggshells around her in case of a delayed reaction, but it never came. Even my dad seemed to relax after a week of her weird behaviour, but with my mom I live by the motto ‘expect the unexpected’ method, at least that way I should be able to escape the incoming wrath.

They both are in so much trouble.
Teacher-student relations often end badly and according to the prologue, this will be the case. That said, there are exceptions, Macron and his Brigitte in France for example !
Interesting story, can’t wait to read more soon.
You are right about that, given the prologue i do think it didn’t end well for them, especially for Bette.
I’m enjoying this interesting story. Looking forward to see the developments in Bette & Tina’s relationship.
Highlights for me – The earring, as a true Tibette fan, I loved that moment when their eyes locked and they were holding hands.
And, yes! – The Shawshank Redemption is one of the best movies and an all-time favorite of mine.
