Chapter 2 – Philadelphia – Day 1
Bette loved the accommodations. The room was a Landmark Corner Suite high above the city. The suite had views looking to the north and to the east of the city. It had a large luxury king size bed, elegant bath, and a sitting room with desk, computer hookups, sofas and a smart television set. The room had an alcove which was set up like a bar with a small microwave, coffee maker and a dorm size refrigerator. The cabinet had some glasses and some dishes and there were some dinning utensils should the resident care to have a meal in their room. The hotel had 24-hour room service, as well as a restaurant and two bars.
Bette and Tina awakened at 7:00 am local time with the help of an alarm clock. They showered and dressed in their business power suits and proceeded down to the hotel restaurant. Coffee was the first order of the day.
Bette: Nice room sweetie.
Tina: Well, it was one of nicest I could find. I wanted you to be comfortable this weekend. I know that it maybe a little stressful and I wanted a place we could retreat and get away from it all.
Bette: Since you are with me, I believe that it’s going to be a whole lot less stressful. But needless to say, I am a bit nervous about this. I think almost anything to do with dear sweet Melvin makes me nervous.
Tina: I talked to Mary, to Paris and to Kit earlier this week. They are all anxious for you and they all wish you good luck. And they told me to tell you that if there were any problems, they would be on the next plane to come to your rescue.
Bette: I have been having almost daily phone calls with Mom over the last month to see who she could remember in Dad’s firm whom he worked with and who might know something about his personal life. There were two people who kept coming up in almost every conversation. His secretary, Harriet Myers and his partner Gabriel Scott.
Tina: And did she know these people personally?
Bette: She knew Harriet well. Harriet was older than mother and was evidently one of the few people in the world Dad trusted. He used her to make all his personal arrangements for travel and entertainment and to do personal business. She assured me that if Dad was having a fling that Harriet would know who, when and where. We are to meet with her tomorrow morning. She has extended us an invitation to come to her home for brunch. There she will answer whatever questions we have.
