    “They’re still with her, but if it helps she was alert when they brought her in and had your daughter on her lap.”

    The rounded the corner and Angelica got up from the coloring table and ran to Bette. Bette scooped her up in her arms and kissed her face all over.

     

    “Are you ok Boo?”

     

    “I made you a picture Mama B,” Angie wiggled out of Bette’s arms to retrieve her picture.

     

    “Were you hurt?”

     

    “No,” Angie smiled sweetly. “Mama T had a big cut that was bleeding though and used a lot of bad words you say I’m not supposed to say even with Auntie Alice says them.”

     

    “I bet she did,” Bette chuckled. “Where is Tina?”

     

    The nurse motioned for Bette to follow her, and with Angie in her arms, she quickly fell behind the nurse anxious to get to Tina.

     

    They rounded the corner and saw Tina sitting up in bed holding a white hospital towel to her forehead.

     

    “Oh my god,” Bette set Angie down and ran to Tina’s bedside. “Are you ok?”

     

    “Angry,” Tina laid her hand on Bette’s cheek. “Just angry and want to get out of here.”

     

    “We need to stitch that laceration up Ms. Kennard,” the attendant was writing notes on Tina’s chart. “And we need to do some tests since you hit your head pretty hard.”

     

    “What the hell happened?”

     

    “Some idiot hit our car,” Tina rolled her eyes. “It looks much worse than it is I’m sure.”

     

    “And while I agree with that,” the attendant closed Tina’s medical chart, “I still need to stitch you up and run a CT scan given you hit your head. I don’t want to take any chances.”

     

    “Run as many tests as you need,” Bette said quickly. “I want every precaution taken to make sure nothing else is wrong.”

     

    Tina rolled her eyes as Angelica climbed into Tina’s hospital bed to lay down.

     

    “You tired Boo?” Tina stroked Angelica’s cheek as she started to close her eyes. “How long will this take?”

     

    “The stitches, about 30 minutes since we are waiting on the plastic surgeon to do them to limit scaring. The CT scan, depending on how many are before you, could take a few hours to get it and have the results read.”

    1. At last, Bette is allowing herself to relax with Maxine and just go with the flow. Too bad it takes a family emergency to get to accept the good will of others. She still needs to hear Maxine’s story. This was the first time that anyone had said Melvin had been abusive. I’m not sure Bette understands the extent of Melvin’s abuse. And once she hears it, will she accept that Melvin was not the man she thought he was?

      I love the fact that Maxine called Alice when she knew Kit was not available. Maxine seems to be familiar with what goes on in an emergency room. And she seems to know how to clam Bette down. Good thing Tina is not hurt very bad.

      Good chapter….great story line for this book. I hooked into this story and am anxiously waiting for the next chapter….

      Glad that Tina isn’t that bad injured and that Angelica wasn’t hurt at all.

      Good to see Bette a little bit more relaxed with Maxine and that Maxine seems to respect the boundaries Bette set.

      Looking forward to the next chapter!

      Loving the way Bette is opening up to listen to Maxine.
      I think she will need a lot of support when she finds out the extent of Melvin’s abuse.
