Chapter 27 – Mary Southerland
Bette: Let’s take a few minutes and talk a little.
Tina: Okay, what’s on your mind?
Bette: How are you doing Tina? I want to know really what is going on with you.
Tina: Babe, I am fine. Except for my lifting restrictions, I am almost fully recovered from my surgery. We are doing really well with getting the things done for this move to California. In two weeks, you and Daniel will be going to school and your job. Angie will be starting her life in New Haven. I should be starting my life in my studio. And we will be days away from moving into our new home. Everything is really coming together nicely. I am thrilled with our new home. And thank goodness we found Jim to get those things done. I can’t wait to have my studio finished. Thing are really going better than I ever expected. The kids seem to love playing golf. Mary will be here this afternoon. All our friends and relatives will be here Friday and Saturday. Everything is right on schedule.
Bette: How are you doing with this Angie thing? Her actually leaving for college?
Tina: I’m better. I think I’m ready as much as I can be. How about you?
Bette: I think that night last weekend at the Ritz Carlton with just the two of us helped me tremendously. Emotionally, I have come to the point that she is ready and she is going to be fine. Therefore, I think I’m ready as well. I appreciate you doing that for us more than you know.
Tina: Yeah, I wish it could have been longer. Our trip to New York was the first time that she and I had worked together not so much as mother and daughter but as two adults with a project to do. I saw her as an adult and not my baby anymore. Once that happened, I knew I’m ready to take her to Yale. She will always be my baby. She will always be your baby as well. But she is ready to be the adult she is going to be.
Bette: Yeah. I’ve noticed a change in her during this summer. She seems more confident. She stands taller; she smiles bigger; she holds her own in a conversation. She’s more mature; more responsible for things which are going on. And she is so damn beautiful, just like her mama.
