Chapter 30 – Saturday with the Extended Family
Mary: No problem. That will take about 10 or 15 minutes. Bette, are you just not very handy with tools?
Bette: Me? Noooo… never had to use tools. There has been a time or two. I don’t have a lot of patience with tools.
Tina: Don’t look at me. I can do some things, but I need a leader for construction projects.
Mary, Angie and Daniel laughed.
Bette: Why are you guys laughing?
Mary: I thought that all lesbians had an affinity for tools.
Bette: Well, not this lesbian. Tina maybe.
Tina: Only under duress or for something really simple.
The waitress came and started removing the dinner plates. Bette ordered coffee for everyone but Daniel. She then asked who wanted dessert. Mary, Daniel and Angie ordered a cheesecake and Bette ordered a brownie with ice cream which she agreed to share with Tina. Bette was more interested in the ice cream and Tina loved chocolate. But they were very happy to share.
After dinner and after they had settled up the bill, Tina suggested that they have a walk out on the pier. They all grabbed their jackets and walked into the cool damp breeze. There were only a few fishermen out tonight; none seemed to be having any luck. Daniel talked to each one of them. The group went to the end and look out at what looked like a choppy sea. The ocean was lit up by a partial moon which appeared to be close. The waves were hypnotic as they plowed forth to the break just before hitting the beach.
Mary: This is making me sleepy. I’m so full and the sea is so rhythmic that I am tempted to just allow my eyes to close.
Tina: Well then perhaps we should skip the dancing tonight. If you are needing your rest, we do not need to keep you up.
Mary: I really do not want to disappoint the children.
Bette: Mom, your well-being is more important than a few songs. We’ll make it up to Daniel later this week with Hamilton.
Tina: Are you feeling okay Mom?
Mary: Oh, I’m fine dear. I just suddenly felt like I need to lay down. Chilly out here isn’t it.
Bette: Come on Mom, let’s go get you in bed.
