Chapter 33 – Days of Fun and Then New Haven
Bette: Here we are with our lunch. Would you all like to take a walk with me?
Tina had gotten out her camera and was taking pictures of various things she found interesting. She asked that the group slow down as she was having to run to catch up. Bette stopped and smiled and Tina snapped her picture.
Bette: Oh, not fair. I wasn’t ready to have my picture made.
Tina: Owooo… I’ll give you another chance later to get ready.
Bette: I want to take yours too. You can’t have all the fun.
Tina: Okay, oh look. Isn’t that shrub just so beautiful. I wonder what it looks like in the spring?
The group meandered along the pathway toward the Sheep Meadow. This was a week day and there were not many people in the park. So, the Sheep Meadow as had very few people in it. Bette walked to where an edge where they were partially in sun and some in the shade. As the sun when more toward the space would have a little more shade. But that was a couple hours away as the sun was directly above at this moment. The day was warm but a good breeze blew through to keep the temperatures moderate.
Bette picked out a spot and set down the basket and began to get out the table cloth like disposable blanket. Everyone sat down except for Tina who was setting up her camera and tripod to get some pictures of the group picnic. This camera had a timer and an automatic button to get a shot every 30 seconds or so for the number of minutes set by the operator. Tina set the right angle so that she would get everyone in the picture and every face could be seen by the camera. She then instructed the group to sit in a semi-circle with the open end toward the camera.
Bette saw the Frisbee for Angie and Daniel to play with after lunch. She handed that to Daniel. She handed Angie the stack of paper plates and the packages of disposable flatware. She then began to get out the food and which would be passed around. There was a Tupperware container of fried chicken breast – huge ones. There was a bowl of potato salad, one of cole slaw, and a small bowl of olives and one of sweet pickles. Bette decided to dish out the food so that it all was equally divided and that there would be none left over. Angie assisted with the pickles and olives and passed the completed plate to Mary, then one to Daniel and one to Tina and then one to herself and one to Bette. They then fastened up all the containers and put the used stuff back into the basket. Everyone then began eating like it had been days since they had eaten last.
