Chapter 34 – New Haven to Redondo Beach

Bette: We are going to have some chores to do with our finances. We have money from the sale of the New York Apartment and we should be receiving our distributions from the Melvin Porter estate this week as well. We need to put that money to work for us. The sooner the better.

Tina: I am in hopes that most of the expenses are over with respect to the studio. I should have only the operating expenses of the utilities, repairs and maintenance, supplies and housekeeping. So, I have too much money in my business account for that type expense.

Bette: Here comes the family. We can discuss that later this week.

Tina: Well good morning people. I hope you all slept well.

Angie: I slept like a baby. Evidently moving and organizing is a lot more stressful than I imagined. Okay, breakfast? Oh look, French toast and bacon with fruit. That looks good to me.

Tina:  I think we are going to let you guys just order for yourselves.

Bette: Sounds like a good idea.

Mary: Well, we are packed and ready to go.

Bette: I tell you what, I’ll have a bellman come and collect your bags and bring them down to the car. After breakfast, we will return to our rooms to freshen up for our journey and then we will be on our way.

Suzanne: How long does it take to drive to New York?

Bette:  It takes about 2 hours. But we will stop and have a light lunch and that will take another hour or so. They will probably feed us again on the plane since it’s a five-hour flight. But it’s my plan to sleep most of the way to California.

Tina:  Bette is going to start her new job as a Professor of Arts Appreciation at UCLA on Tuesday. And Daniel starts his classes on Wednesday.

Mary: And our dear beloved Tina will begin her life as an artist.

Tina:  I am going to try my hand at painting. I did some painting when I was in college and I loved it. But I have no idea if I have any talent at all so this is basically a try it and see what happens venture.

    1. I hope I’m reading this story years into the future. Bette and Tina as grandparents, three generations living together, where Daniel will go to college, the scenarios are endless. Thanks for your dedication, Martha.

    2. Fans,
Thank you for commenting. There are only a few more chapters in this Volume. I have completed a Volume 3 of this series … and will continue to publish on a regular basis. This volume starts to address the raising of a boy and the onset of puberty and adolescence. These are the challenging years in a persons life and even more so for the parents going through it with them. Now that Angie is away at Yale, she doesn’t have much of a role in my stories until she returns home.

I know that this is not the normal fan fiction. But what I want to show is how important communication is between Bette and Tina. I want to show how important it is for parents to communicate with their children and how important it is to realize that the objective is raise children to be independent, healthy, happy individuals. And so much goes into that. To have a child go from childhood to adulthood is difficult for parents… probably more difficult than the child themselves will ever realize. To come to the realization that you (as a parent) will not be there to give just the right advice and to object to the wrong decision is a tough bridge to cross. That has been a subplot of most of this story… I hope that has come across in my writing. Bette and Tina are strong parents but its not because they hold tight reigns on their children. Angie and Daniel are unique individuals… at least they are in my story.

Thanks for reading and commenting… stay tuned for more…

      • I alway shook my head while watching the parents of my kids’ friends hold a tight reign and made choices for them which nearly always backfired. Made for quite the lesson in our household.
