Chapter 34 – New Haven to Redondo Beach
Angie: That is provided you have grandchildren.
Bette: We will have grandchildren. I cannot imagine either you or Daniel going through life without having children. When you will have those children will be up to you and the result of your choices. I just hope that Tina and I are not too old to be able to enjoy them.
Tina: That does not mean that you should be in any hurry now, Angie. We would prefer that you get into your professional life first and of course that you have a loving and willing partner to share this experience with. We still have plenty of time before we get too old to enjoy grandchildren.
Bette: Yeah, 20 to 25 years. That’s all the time you’ve got.
Angie laughed: Okay, I think I can deal with that. Daniel? That will make you about 30 years old. I’d be almost 40. Yeah, I think I could make that work. And yes, you are right. Someday, I do want children. I cannot imagine my life without children. But that is a long way off.
Their breakfast was served and the conversation continued in the easy jovial manner. They finished up and went back to their rooms and awaited the bellman to come and retrieve the luggage from all three rooms. The SUV was pulled around the front of the hotel. Bette gathered the keys and went to check out as the family loaded the SUV and Bette drove them to the dorm.
In pulling into the parking lot, there were less people unloading than there were yesterday, but still there were several families moving boxes and luggage into the building. Everyone got out of the SUV. Bette handed Suzanne her overnight bag and Angie hers.
Bette and Tina stepped over to Susanne to say their goodbyes and to offer her their best wishes. This was to allow Mary to say goodbye to Angie. Angie was smiling and cheerful with Mary. Bette could tell that she was expressing how much she appreciated her being around the last ten days to help the family get her to New Haven. She promised to call soon and wished Mary a good flight back to Phoenix.
Angie then turned to Daniel and hugged him and kissed his cheek. They were close. Considering their age difference, most were really surprised at how close they really were. Daniel was doing all he could to keep his emotions in check. Tina could see that he was making all the effort he could. Bette then asked Tina to sit in the back seat with Daniel on the way to New York and asked Mary to ride up front. Seeing Daniel’s emotional state stiffened Bette and Tina’s resolve not to be emotional.

I hope I’m reading this story years into the future. Bette and Tina as grandparents, three generations living together, where Daniel will go to college, the scenarios are endless. Thanks for your dedication, Martha.
Fans,
Thank you for commenting. There are only a few more chapters in this Volume. I have completed a Volume 3 of this series … and will continue to publish on a regular basis. This volume starts to address the raising of a boy and the onset of puberty and adolescence. These are the challenging years in a persons life and even more so for the parents going through it with them. Now that Angie is away at Yale, she doesn’t have much of a role in my stories until she returns home.
I know that this is not the normal fan fiction. But what I want to show is how important communication is between Bette and Tina. I want to show how important it is for parents to communicate with their children and how important it is to realize that the objective is raise children to be independent, healthy, happy individuals. And so much goes into that. To have a child go from childhood to adulthood is difficult for parents… probably more difficult than the child themselves will ever realize. To come to the realization that you (as a parent) will not be there to give just the right advice and to object to the wrong decision is a tough bridge to cross. That has been a subplot of most of this story… I hope that has come across in my writing. Bette and Tina are strong parents but its not because they hold tight reigns on their children. Angie and Daniel are unique individuals… at least they are in my story.
Thanks for reading and commenting… stay tuned for more…
I alway shook my head while watching the parents of my kids’ friends hold a tight reign and made choices for them which nearly always backfired. Made for quite the lesson in our household.
